SPARTANBURG, S.C.-- Despite Wofford’s Stacy Byrd’s 13 kills and Catelyn Amende’s 12 kills, the Terriers fell in four sets, 3-1 (25-21, 18-25, 25-23, 25-22), to the visiting Davidson Wildcats in Ben Johnson Arena in a Southern Conference match.
The Terriers slip to 10-9 overall and 0-2 in the SoCon, while the Wildcats pick up their first conference win and improve to 9-8 overall.
Byrd recorded 13 kills on on 30 attempts with two errors for .367 hitting percentage, and Amenda had 12 kills with three errors on 24 attempts for a .375 hitting percentage. The duo combined for 31.5 total points, which was just under half the team's total points of 64. Byrd had 16 points as she added four block assists and a service ace, and Amende had 15.5 points with a solo block, three block assists and an ace. They were the only two Terriers with double-digit kills.
In the first set, Wofford fell behind early, 6-1, but rallied to cut the lead to 14-13. Wofford never led in the set as the Wildcats held the wire-to-wire lead and won the set 25-21.
The second set saw closer competition as the two teams had four ties over the first 16 points. A Davidson attack error and back-to-back kills by Byrd gave Wofford an 11-8 lead. The Terriers never let up in the set as they tied the match at one set apiece with a 25-18 win. Byrd recorded seven kills in the set as the Terriers outhit the Wildcats .406 to .188.
Trailing 7-2 in the third set, Wofford cut the lead to 9-6 highlighted with kills by Amanda Liguori and Rachel Woodlee. Reagan Styles aggressive serving rallied the Terriers tie the match at ten. Wofford would take a 17-14 lead on another Liguori. However, Davidson would rally to tie the match and win the set 25-23. With the score tied at 21, Wofford made two attack errors and only registered one kill over the final six points.
With the match on the line in set four, the two teams had a total of 13 ties in the set. Neither team built more than a three point lead (4-1 and 5-2 Wofford). Trailing by a point 23-22, the Terriers were called for a crucial blocking error and an attack error as the Wildcats took the set 25-22.
Bekah Dorsey collected her team leading seventh double-double of the season. She handed out 20 assists and picked up 14 digs. Tara Gough passed out 16 assists, while Reagan Styles had 11 digs. Melissa Kearse added two service aces.
Wofford will return to the hardwood Friday against the College of Charleston at 7 p.m. as they continue their SoCon homestand.
