STATESBORO, Ga. – The Wofford College men’s basketball team picked up a 74-65 win over Georgia Southern at Hanner Fieldhouse on Wednesday night. The Terriers led by as many 17 points as late in the second half, but the Eagles fought back to make it close in the end.
Wofford is 7-9 on the season and 4-1 in the Southern Conference and Georgia Southern is 4-14 overall and 0-5 in SoCon play. The Terriers were led by Noah Dahlman, who had 26 points and six rebounds and was a perfect 10-of-10 from the floor. Terry Martin added 15 points and Kevin Giltner scored eleven. The Eagles were led by Ben Drayton with 15 points and Jelani Hewitt with four rebounds.
“It was not always pretty but I will take any win here,” said head coach Mike Young. “We did some very good things again. Dahlman was ten-of-ten in the game and Terry Martin was very good tonight. It is a road win in the league and we will take it and get back up the road tomorrow.”
The Terriers scored first and used two three pointers by Kevin Giltner to take an 11-8 lead at the 13:12 mark in the first half. Two lay-ups by Terry Martin pushed the advantage to 15-8 at 9:34. The Eagles battled back with three pointers and took a 26-25 lead with 2:14 left in the first half. A three by Cameron Rundles regained the advantage for Wofford at 28-26 with 1:38 on the clock and a bucket by Noah Dahlman at the buzzer made it a 30-26 contest at the half.
To begin the second half, Wofford had a put-back by Tim Johnson. The Terriers held a 37-33 advantage four minutes into play. A traditional three point play and a three by Kevin Giltner pushed the lead to 42-33 at the 13:54 mark. Two free throws by Jamar Diggs and a lay-up by Noah Dahlman made it a 51-38 score with 9:05 left in the half.
Wofford added to the lead and had a 15 point advantage with eight minutes left after two more free throws by Jamar Diggs. The Terriers kept going inside and had a 64-50 lead with 1:33 left in the game. The Eagles answered with full-court pressure that forced two turnovers and cut the lead to 64-57 after a three by Zuri James with 46 seconds left. After four straight free throws for Wofford, James hit another three and added a foul shot to make it 68-61 game with 26 seconds on the clock. The Terriers were able to make six straight free throws down the stretch for a 74-65 final score.
Wofford shot 58.5% from the floor and was 45.5% from three. From the free throw line, the Terriers were 77.8%. Georgia Southern was 49.0% overall and was 58.3% from behind the arc. They were 83.3% from the line. The Terriers had a 26-19 lead in rebounds and forced 15 turnovers.
The Terriers will face Davidson on Saturday, January 15 in Davidson, N.C. Wofford returns home on January 20 against Chattanooga for the first of three-straight home games at Benjamin Johnson Arena.
