SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Mahagony Williams scored her 1,000th career point and recorded her Wofford leading 23 double-double of her career and four double-double of the season, but the Terrier fell 64-47 to the visiting Elon University Phoenix Sunday afternoon in a Southern Conference game in Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Williams needed four points coming into the contest to become the 12th Terrier all-time to score 1,000 career points. She recorded her first three points of the game on an old fashion three-point play at the 9:11 mark in the first half. She broke the mark with bucket with 3:40 remaining in the first half. Williams finished the game with a team-leading 11 points and 15 rebounds. It was the fourth time in her career she has grabbed 15-plus rebounds in a game. Her career-high is 17 boards that came against Davidson in February of the 2007-2008 season, her freshman year. She currently has 1,007 points, which is four points from moving into 11th all-time in points in a career. She also currently sits with 757 career rebounds with is fourth all-time. With 43 more rebounds this season she could become only the fourth Terrier to reach at least 1,000 points and 800 rebounds all-time.
The Terriers opened the game with a 10-4 lead five minutes into the action on a Logan Morris steal and layup. But, Elon would climb back into the game with a 12-0 run capped off with two Kelsey Harris free throws with 11:10 to play in the half to give the Phoenix a 16-10 lead.
Elon took their largest lead of the half, 22-15, on a Shon Redmon layup with 7:09 remainin. Wofford would pull within three, 22-19, on Williams’ layup that pushed her over the 1,000th point mark with just over three minutes remaining, but Elon never allowed the Terriers to regain the lead as they took a 31-25 lead into the half.
In the second half, the Phoenix pushed their lead to 13 points, 42-29, on a Lei Lei Hairston jumper with 15:19 remaining in the game, and extended it to 15 points, 48-33, four minutes later on a Ali Ford layup.
Play got chippy as both teams picked up their physical play and with 10:08 to play in the half double personal fouls were assessed following a loose ball rebounds. The two teams combined for 40 personal fouls -- Wofford 21, Elon 19.
Wofford closed the margin to 48-36 on a Kelly Blake basket with 8:37 on the clock, but Elon too their largest lead of the game with 4:43 to play on a Candice Silas layup to make it 56-39. Wofford used a 5-0 mini-run to trim the lead to 12, 56-44, a minute later on Blake three, but Elon would pull away and take the 64-47 win.
Elon finished the game with a 31 percent field goal percentage, and made only 1-of-8 three point attempts to finished 13 percent from three. They Phoenix were also 73 percent, 19-of-26 from the free throw line. Wofford shot 32 percent from the floor and seven percent from three making only one of their 13 attempted shots from long range. They were also 50 percent from the charity strip, 10-of-20.
The Phoenix notched 40 points in the paint compared to Wofford’s 20 paint points, and Elon pulled down 52 rebounds holding a plus 11 margin over the Terriers, who only grabbed 41 boards. The two teams combined for 52 turnovers with Wofford turning the ball over 29 times compared the Elon’s 23 turnovers.
Williams was the only Terrier to only Terrier to reach double digits with her 11 points. Daniella Motley scored nine points, while April Moorhouse’s eight-game double-digit scoring streak came to a close as she finished with eight points, all of which coming in the first half.
For the Phoenix, Ali Ford notched a game-high 17 points and collected eight rebounds. Kelsey Evans followed with 13 points.
Wofford was held to the their lowest offensive output of the season, 47 points. It was the second time this season the Terriers had scored 47 points dating back to the season opening loss to Gardner-Webb. It was also the first time since the 2005-2006 season the Terriers had managed only one three pointer made in a game. Wofford went 1-14 against Elon for a 7.1 three point percentage on February 7, 2006. Sunday the Terriers were 1-of-13 for 7.7 percent.
The Terriers will return to action Wednesday, January 19 as they travel to the short trip to Greenville, S.C. to take on in-state rival Furman in Timmons Arena with tipoff schedule for 7 p.m.
