Wildcats Bounce Terriers, 80-50

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats used a 28-6 run to close out the first half on their way to an 80-50 win over Wofford Saturday night in a Southern Conference game in Benjamin Johnson Arena.

Davidson turned a one point Wofford lead, 17-16, with nine minutes to play in the first half into a 44-23 halftime lead for the Wildcats as they improve their season record to 7-10 overall and 3-6 in SoCon play.  Wofford falls to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in the conference.

The Terriers started the game with an early three point lead on an April Moorhouse three-point play on Wofford’s second possession of the game.  Davidson would score the next eight points to take an 8-3 lead on a Luara Murray layup.

The Wildcats took their lead to 16-8 on an Amanda Ottaway basket with 12:51 remaining the the game, but the Terriers would respond with a 9-0 run to take a 17-16 lead on a Mariah Masalin basket with nine minutes to play in the half.  Masalin had five of the points during the run will Mahagony Williams notched the other four.

Wofford wouldn’t score again until the four and a half minutes late when an Ashely Kroker three broke a 12-0 Davidson run to make the score 28-20.  The Terriers only other points of the half came on Williams free throw shot with 3:41 to play, and a Williams layup with 3:09 remaining.  From the four and a half minute mark Davidson would pile on 16 more points to take a 44-23 lead into the break.

Wofford was 27 percent from the field and 43 percent from three-point range, while Davidson was 54 percent overall and 38 percent from three.

In the second half, Davidson came out and extended the lead to 27 points, 50-23, two minutes into the half.  Wofford would battle and cut the lead back down to 19 points, 50-31, with a 7-0 capped off by a Kelly Blake three.  With 15 minutes remaining, another Blake three cut the lead to 55-37, 18 points, but the Terriers would never pull any closer as the Wildcats would extend the lead to 30 points, 71-41, eight minutes later.

Davidson took their largest lead of the game 60-46, but the Wofford would score the final four points as they fell 80-50.

Wofford finished with a 31 percent field goal percentage and a 38 percent three-point percentage, while Davidson went 50 percent fro the field and 29 percent from three.

Davidson used 22 Wofford turnovers to score 29 points, while the Terriers turned 14 Wildcat turnovers into 15 points.  

Davidson won the battle of the boards 42-35 and scored 48 points in the paint compared to Wofford’s 22 paint points.

Moorhouse paced the Terriers with 12 points, while Williams scored 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.  Blake tied a career-high with eight points.  Rachel Brittenham also scored eight points and handed out four assists.

Leading the way for Davidson was Sophia Aleksandravicius, who scored 21 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, blocked four shots and handed out four assists.  She was 10-of-17 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the free throw line.  Murray added 14 points, and Jasmine Calin scored 11 points off the Davidson bench.  Chloe Woodington had a game-high eight assists.  

Aleksandravicius was the fourth Wofford opponent this season to score ten or more field goals in a game, and the third player to score 20 or more points and grab ten or more rebounds in a game.

Wofford will travel to Statesboro, Ga. for their next game against Southern Conference opponent Georgia Southern Monday with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.  Wofford won the last meeting between the two teams this season, 78-66, back on December 20.
