SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Freshman guard Logan Morris poured in a career-high tying 16 points for the Terriers, but Wofford couldn’t overcome a late 10-1 run by UNC Greensboro as the Spartans escaped from Benjamin Johnson Arena with a 60-51 Southern Conference win Saturday afternoon.
Morris, who set her previous career-high against UNCG earlier in the season, was 7-of-12 from the field, made her only three point attempt and was 1-of-3 from the free throw line to earn her 16 points.
Wofford started the game with the first points on an April Moorhouse layup, but Greensboro went on a 9-2 run to take a 9-4 lead with just under five minutes into play.
The Terriers mounted an 11-2 run that tied the game at 11 at the ten minute mark on a Mahagony Williams basket, and saw the Terriers take a 15-11 lead on a Morris jumper at the seven and half minute mark.
The Spartans would tie the game at 15 with 5:38 remaining in the half on a Dayshaun Richbow layup. The two teams would trade the lead five times over the final five and half minutes as UNCG carried a 22-21 lead into the half.
Wofford came out of the locker rooms fast, as they used a 9-4 run to take a six point lead, 32-26 with 15:40 to play on Morris’ ninth point of the night.
However, the Spartans would respond with a 10-0 stretch to take a 36-32 lead on Sarah Folwell three with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game. Wofford would cut the lead to 36-35 with a Morris jumper, her eleventh point of the night, just under 12 to play.
UNCG answered with a game clinching 10-1 run over the next seven minutes to take a 46-36 lead with 4:46 to play. On the Terrier’s next possession as Williams post move cut the lead to eight points, but that would be as close as Wofford would pull over the final four minutes of action as they fell 60-51.
Greensboro held a slight shooting advantage going 37 percent from the floor, 21 percent from three and 55 percent from the free throw line, while Wofford was 33 percent overall, 20 percent from long distance and 50 percent from three.
Wofford made eight of their 16 attempted free throws, while UNCG made 15 of their 27 free throw attempts. Over the Terriers last four games they have gone 20-of-40 from the free throw line, while opponents have converted 63 of their 100 attempts from the charity stripe.
Williams joined Morris in double-digit points for the Terrier as she added 11 points and came one rebounds shy of a double-double. Daniella Motley led all rebounders with a career-high 14 rebounds, which is the second highest mark for a Terrier this season. Rachel Brittenham, who is the SoCon leader in assists, handed out six assists in the game.
Monique Floyd paced the Spartans with 26 points, by going 9-of-12 from the floor, 7-of-10 from the line and made her only three point attempt. Janae Stevenson added 11 points and was the only other UNCG player in double figures.
Wofford held a plus 12 rebounding margin, 48-36, but had a minus 13 turnover margin, 31-18.
The Terriers slip to 6-13 overall and 2-9 in the SoCon, while the Spartans improve to 10-10 and 7-5 in conference play.
Wofford will return to action Saturday, February 5 against UT-Chattanooga in Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Mocs gave the Terriers a 93-88 loss in the first meeting this season between the two teams.
