BIRMINGHAM, ALA. -- Daniella Motley poured in a career-high 18 points and 11 rebounds to earn her second career double-double for Wofford in the 79-62 loss to the Samford Bulldogs Tuesday night in the Pete Hanna Center.
Wofford falls to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in Southern Conference play, while Samford improves to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in conference games.
In the first half, Wofford made their opening basket on a Mahagony Williams post moved just 30 seconds in the action, but the Terriers would go scoreless for four minutes as the Bulldogs took a 7-3 lead. Savannah Hill had four of the team’s first six points for Samford.
After another Williams bucket at the 15:34 mark, the Terriers again would go on a five minute scoring drought as Samford would push their lead to 19-6 before Motley would make back-to-back baskets to chip into the Bulldog lead to make it 19-8 with ten minutes to play.
A minute later Wofford had trimmed the Samford lead to eight points, 21-13, on a Motley post move, but the Bulldogs would quickly push the lead to 14 points, 29-15 four minutes later on a Shelby Campbell three. The Bulldog lead went as high as 36-17 in the first half, but Samford took a 38-24 lead into the break as an Emily London runner at the buzzer ended the half.
Motley posted 12 first half points tying her previous career-high mark. She was 6-of-8 from the floor, and collected a team-high four rebounds.
At the start of the second half, Samford quickly ran the lead to 20, 50-30, on two Brittany Jack free throws, just over three minutes into the action. The lead hit 25 points,57-32, at the 14:26 mark on a Hill layup and at the 6:55 mark, 69-44, on a Hannah Dawson layup.
The Bulldogs took their largest lead of the game with just under three minutes to play on a Campbell basket, but Wofford would close out the game with an 11-0 run to give the game the final score of 79-62.
Wofford was 43 percent from the floor and made only three of their 15 three point attempts to finish with a 20 percent three point percentage. It was the second time this year Wofford finished 3-for-15 from behind the arc in a game. Samford posted a 57 percent field goal percentage and a 33 percent three point percentage.
Motley led the Terriers with her 18 points and 11 rebounds, which also tied a career mark, to post her second career double-double. She also finished with two assists and two blocked shots, while going 9-of-14 from the field. Motley has scored in double digits in each of the Terriers last four games. Moorhouse finished with 15 points by going 6-of-11 from the floor after. All 15 of her points game in the second half. Rachel Brittenham, who leads the Southern Conference 5.5 assists per game, finished with five assists and added ten points.
For the Bulldogs, Hill had 17 points of 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. Two of her seven made baskets was from three. Hill also grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds for the Bulldogs. London added 13 points, and Campbell chipped in with 12 points.
Wofford will return to action on Saturday, January 8 against Appalachian State with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m. in Ben Johnson Arena.
