SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-22) Southern Conference match to the Elon Phoenix Friday night in the Benjamin Johnson Arena to fall to 13-12 overall and 2-7 in SoCon play.
The Terriers opened the match with a four unanswered points before the Phoenix got on the scoreboard. Wofford pushed its lead to 5-1, but Elon rallied back to pull within one, 7-6, and eventually tie the set at eight on a service ace. Elon broke a tie at nine with a 10-4 run to take a 19-14 lead and control of the set. Wofford pulled within, five points four times, but was unable to pull any closer as the Phoenix held on for the 25-19 win.
Set two opened with a 7-3 run by the Phoenix, only to see the Terriers rally with a 3-1 run to pull within one point, 8-7. However, Elon mounted an 11-2 run to take a 19-9 lead. Wofford chipped into the lead, as they closed the gap to seven points, 23-16, but dropped the set 25-17.
The two teams traded points early, but Elon broke a tie at three with a 7-2 run to take a 10-5 lead. Wofford responded with 6-2 run to cut into the Phoenix lead and make the score 12-11. Wofford used kills from Bekah Dorsey and Rachel Woodlee and Elon errors to rally back into the set. Following an Elon timeout, the Phoenix responded with a 4-1 run to push the lead to 16-12, to force Wofford to call a timeout. The Terriers came out of their timeout with a 5-1 run to pull within one, 18-17. Amanda Liguori had three kills during the run. Wofford pulled even at 20, on a Lucy Reser kill to tie the set for the first time. After an Elon point, Reser again tied the set, and Woodlee gave the Terriers a 22-21 lead on a kill. However, Elon ended the set on a 4-0 run to end the match with the 25-22 set win.
Amanda Liguori earned her team leading eighth double-double of the season with a team-high 12 kills and tied a team-high with 11 digs. She also had a team-high .385 hitting percentage. Woodlee followed with seven kills and Wendy Burnett and Anderson had six kills. Reagan Styles kept her consecutive dig streak alive with 11 digs to push the streak to 17 matches. Woodlee led the team with two solo blocks. Dorsey handed out a time-high 25 assists in the set.
Wofford was outhit in the match .377 to .272, but held a small advantage at the net with four team blocks to three for Elon.
The Terriers, who have dropped their last five matches, will host UNC Greensboro in the Benjamin Johnson Arena Saturday at 6 p.m. for their next game.
