Strong Shooting Performance Not Enough as ODU Overcomes Wofford, 70-58

NORFOLK, VA. – Despite outshooting Old Dominion the Wofford women’s basketball team fell, 70-58, Wednesday night to the Lady Monarchs in the Ted Constant Center in a non-conference game.
 
Wofford held a 41 percent field goal percentage, 31 percent three-point percentage and 50 percent free throw percentage, while ODU was 41 percent from the floor, 18 percent from long range and 86 percent from the line.  The Lady Monarchs went to the charity stripe 21 times converting 18, while Wofford made five of their ten attempts.
 
Down 4-2, Rachel Brittenham knocked down a jumper and Daniella Motley converted a layup with the shot clock winding down to give the Terriers a 6-4 lead at the 16-minute mark.  Logan Morris followed with a three to push the Wofford lead to 9-4 30 seconds later.
 
Following an ODU bucket, Wofford responded with an April Moorhouse jumper and a free throw by Morris to give Wofford a 12-6 lead with 12:22 to play.  ODU cut the lead to 12-10 with baskets by Mari Buchan and Tiffany Minor a minute and a half later.  Moorhouse ended the 4-0 Lady Monarch run with her second jumper and a Motley fast break lay-in sparked a 6-0 Terrier run to push the lead to 18-10 with just over nine minutes to play.   Jackie Cook ended the Wofford run with a corner three at the eight-minute mark to pull ODU within five points, 18-13.
 
The Lady Monarchs used the three to go on an 8-1 run to take a 21-19 lead, but Wrightson tied the game at 21 on the next Wofford possession with 3:21 to play before the half.
 
With Wofford trailing 25-22, Wrightson knocked down her seventh point of the half with a long three to tie the score, but the Lady Monarchs closed the final 1:48 to play in the half with a 7-0 run highlighted by a Tia Lewis three-point play to give ODU a 32-25 halftime advantage.
 
Moorhouse joined Wrightson with seven points in the half for Wofford, while Lewis led all scorers with nine points for ODU.
 
Coming out of the break, the Lady Monarchs pushed their lead to 34-25, but Wofford mounted an 8-2 run to cut the lead to 36-33 on Rachel Brittenham baseline jumper at the 17-minute mark, but ODU responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead to 44-33 a minute later.  Wofford hung around and pulled with seven points, 48-41, on back-to-back Brittenham threes with 14 minutes to play.
 
ODU took the lead right back to double digits, 54-41, on back-to-back Lewis layups at the 11-minute mark as part of 6-0 Lady Monarchs run.  A Morris jumper and a Moorhouse three trimmed the lead to eight, 54-46, but a Buchan layup put the lead right back to ten points, 56-46, two and half minutes later. 
 
The Terriers didn’t quit as they cut the lead to eight points, 59-51, but ODU again pushed the lead back to double digits, 62-51, on a Myeisha Hall three-point play with seven and a half minutes in the game.
 
Wofford again put pressure on ODU with a 4-0 run on two Brittenham elbow jumpers to cut the lead to 62-55, three minutes later.  Following a Lewis basket at 3:34 neither team would score for the next 2:18 until Lewis converted two free throws with 56 seconds to play to push the Lady Monarch lead back to double-digits, 66-55.  ODU held on for the win, 70-58, with free throws from Ashley Betz-White and Lewis in the closing seconds.
 
ODU held a 40-20 advantage on points in the paint and scored 25 points off 21 Wofford turnovers.  Wofford scored 16 points off of 18 ODU turnovers.
 
Brittenham and Moorhouse paced the Terriers with 14 points.  Twelve of Brittenham’s points came in the second half for Wofford.  Daniella Motley picked up her first double-double of the season with 11 points and ten rebounds.  Wofford has now had three or more players score in double-digits in seven of the team’s eight games.
 
Brittenham and Wrightson had a game-high five assists for Wofford.  
 
For the Lady Monarchs, Lewis recorded a game-high 27 points.  She was 8-of-12 from the floor and 11-of-13 from the free throw line.  Buchan added 13 points and a team-high nine rebounds.  Hall chipped in nine points for ODU.
 
With the loss, Wofford drops their second straight game and falls to 6-2 overall., while ODU improves to 2-8.  Despite the skid, the Terriers are still receiving votes in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll.
 
Wofford will travel to the Asheville Collegiate Invitational for a neutral site game against Radford on Saturday, December 10 at 2 p.m.  The game will be televised on WMYA-TV, My 40 with Scot Powell and Philpott calling the game and sideline reporter Tiffany Ervin.
