Paladins Complete Season Sweep of Terriers With 88-65 Win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Despite four Terriers in double digits, Wofford fell 88-65 to in-state rival Furman in a Southern Conference showdown in the Benjamin Johnson Arena Wednesday night.

With the loss, the Terriers fall to 7-18 overall and and 3-14 in SoCon play, while the Paladins improve to 12-15 overall and 8-10 in the conference with the season sweep over the Terriers.  Wofford is now 0-12 in games starting later than 6 p.m.

The Paladins opened the game with a 14-2 run over the first seven minutes of play and extended the lead to as high as 19 points, 28-9, with 7:40 to play in the half.

Wofford would fight back with an 11-5 run to cut the margin to nine points, 32-23, with 4:22 to play.  Maddie Helms had seven points for the Terriers during the run including two from long range.

The Terriers couldn’t get any closer or cut the lead back to single digits as the Paladins closed out the the final four plus minutes of the half with an 8-5 run to carry a 40-29 lead into the break.

In the first 20 minutes of play, the Terriers had 14 turnovers that lead to 18 Paladin points, while Furman only had seven turnovers that lead to four Wofford points.  Wofford finished the game with 20 turnovers committing only six in the second half. Furman finished with 28 points off of Terrier turnovers, while Wofford only had eight points off 14 Furman give-a-ways.

Furman came out in the second half, and quickly pushed the lead to 19 points, 50-31, just a minute and half into the action.  Four minutes later, Wofford would cut the lead to 52-40, and eventually pull within ten points 59-49 at the 10:36 mark, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Paladins reeled off a 9-0 run to take a 19 point lead, 68-49, with just over nine minutes to play.  Furman would take the lead to as high as 25 points twice before claiming the 88-65 win.

Wofford finished the game with a 36 percent field goal percentage and a 27 percent three point percentage, while Furman went 38 percent from the floor and 36 percent from three.  The Paladins converted 26 of their 33 free throw attempts for 79 percent, while Wofford only saw the line 27 times and converted 16 of their attempts for 59 percent.  

Furman held a plus nine rebounding margin, 51-42, but Wofford converted 24 second chance points on 19 offensive rebounds.  Furman had 19 points on 23 offensive boards.

Mahagony Williams led the Terriers with 17 points and ten rebounds for her third double-double in four games, her seventh of the season and her 26th of her career.  Williams had six blocks on the defensive end for the Terriers.  April Moorhouse added her second double-double of the season and of her career with 14 points and ten boards.  Wofford also received double-digit points from Logan Morris and Helms, who both scored 11 points.  Helms also led the team with four assists, and played a team-high and career-high 32 minutes.

The Paladins also had four players in double figures as Kelly O’Connor notched a game high 18 points.  Kendra Berry followed with 16 points, and Raegan Thompson had 14 points and ten rebounds.  Kaitlin Murphy was the final Furman player in double-digits as she contributed 13 points and had five assists.  

Wofford will travel Boone, N.C. to play SoCon leading Appalachian State Saturday, with tip off scheduled for 2 p.m. The Mountaineers took the first game between the two teams 81-60 on January 8.
