DAVIDSON, N.C. -- The Wofford women’s basketball team ended the regular season with an 88-57 loss to Davidson as the Wildcats completed the season sweep Sunday afternoon in the John M. Belk Arena in a Southern Conference showdown.
The Terriers will enter the SoCon Tournament with a 7-21 overall record and a 3-17 mark in the SoCon as the 11th seed. They will play UNC Greensboro Thursday, March 3 at approximately 5:00 p.m. in the opening round of the tournament. With the win, Davidson improves to 13-16 overall and 8-12 in conference play as the eighth seed.
Davidson opened up the game with the first seven points of the game to take a 7-0 lead with just under 18 minutes to play. Wofford would cut the lead to 9-6 on an April Moorhouse layup with 15:34 to play, but the Wildcats responded with an 8-0 run to take a 17-6 lead with 11:40 remaining in the half.
Davidson would take the lead to 18 points, 30-12, with six and a half to play, and hit 20 points, 36-16, with 3:42 to play. They took their largest lead of the half with 2:24 to play, 42-16, but Wofford cut the lead to 46-26 at the half.
In the second half, the Wildcats pushed the lead to 28 points, 56-28, with 17:02 remaining, as they would hold their lead in the upper 20s for the remainder of the half until the five minute mark when the lead hit 30 points, 80-50.
Davidson finished with a 31 point win, 88-57, and finished the game 50 percent from the field and 50 percent from three. They were also 86 percent from the free throw line. Wofford was 36 percent overall, 25 percent from three and 57 percent from the charity stripe.
The Terriers had 23 turnovers that lead to 30 Wildcat points, while Davidson only turned the ball over 16 time resulting in 14 Wofford points.
Davidson had 14 fast break points, compared to none for Wofford, and the Wildcats benched chipped in 41 points, while Wofford’s scored 32 points.
Mahagony Williams paced the Terriers with 15 points and nine rebounds, while April Moorhouse scored 14 points. Moorhouse has scored in double-digits in the past four games. Rachel Brittenham handed out three assists pulling her within six assists for tying the school record for assists in the a single season and seven from snapping the record.
Davidson had five players scored in double-figures, which was the first time this season against the Terriers. Amanda Ottaway led the Wildcats with 14 points, while Sophia Aleksandravicius, Laura Murray and Ashley Lax had 12 points. Katrin Chiemeka chipped in then points. Aleksandravicius had a double-double with 11 rebounds. Barbara Sitton had a team-high six assists.
