SPARTANURG, S.C. – Despite an 11-0 run to start the second half, the Wofford men’s basketball team was defeated 67-58 by Davidson on Wednesday night at Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Wildcats had a ten-point lead at the half, but the Terriers gained the advantage with a 16-2. Davidson however outscored Wofford 10-4 in the final five minutes for the road win.
Wofford is 13-12 on the season and 10-4 in the Southern Conference and Davidson is 13-12 overall and 7-7 in SoCon play. The Wildcats have now won five straight games. The Terriers were led by Jamar Diggs and Cameron Rundles, each with 13 points. Noah Dahlman added eleven points, while Tim Johnson had 13 rebounds. The Wildcats were led by Brendan McKillop with 16 points, followed by Clint Mann with twelve.
“I was disappointed,” said Wofford head coach Mike Young. “We looked slow and tired. We were slow to the ball and did not have that energy that we have come to anticipate and expect each night. Davidson made five threes in the first half and we have to do a better job on the arc. We came out in the second half and played the game, but Davidson played well and deserved to win the game.”
The Wildcats took an early 7-3 lead, but the Terriers tied it up at seven three minutes into play. Wofford had a one-point advantage after a lay-up by Terry Martin, but Davidson scored the next five for a 17-13 lead with 13:45 on the clock. The contest was tied at 17, 19 and 21 before the Wildcats hit back-to-back threes for a 27-21 lead. With the score 29-25 with 6:41 left in the half, Davidson scored eight of the final ten points for a 37-27 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Terriers used an 11-0 run to open play and take a 38-37 lead with 14:40 on the clock. During the run, Noah Dahlman scored four points and Tim Johnson added three. The Wildcats scored their first points of the second half at 13:52 with a lay-up, but it was answered at the other end of the floor with a dunk by Tim Johnson for a 40-39 lead at 13:05.
Kevin Giltner hit a jumper and added a free throw for a 43-49 lead with 11:49 left in the game. The Wildcats answered with back-to-back threes to regain the lead with10:31 on the clock. After a lay-up by Noah Dahlman, Davidson added another three for a 48-45 advantage. Wofford answered with a jumper from the corner by Terry Martin and a three by Cameron Rundles for a 50-48 lead with 8:16 remaining.
Davidson scored the next five points, all by J.P. Kuhlman, to make it a 53-50 game with 7:12 on the clock. After two free throws by Jamar Diggs, the Wildcats had a 55-54 lead with 5:29 left in the game. Over the final five minutes, Davidson would outscore Wofford 10-4, including the final five points of the game for the 67-58 final.
Wofford shot 40.0% from the floor and was 25.0% from three, making only one of four attempts. From the free throw line, the Terriers were 65.0%. Davidson was 43.4% overall and was 39.1% from behind the arc. They were 70.6% from the line. Davidson had a 36-35 edge on the glass. Terry Martin fouled out for the Terriers.
The Terriers remain at home on Saturday, February 12 against Georgia Southern. The game against the Eagles will be Senior Night for Noah Dahlman, Jamar Diggs, Tim Johnson, Terry Martin and Cameron Rundles.
