SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 4-2 by Furman at Russell C. King Field. The game was tied at two after three innings, but the Paladins plated runs in the fifth and sixth to take the second game of the weekend series.
Wofford is now 11-8 on the season and 0-2 in SoCon play, while Furman is 9-11 overall and 3-4 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Clark Wise with two hits and an RBI. The Paladins were led by Aaron Thompkins with two hits and Reese Wade with two RBIs.
In the top of the first, Furman scored one run on an RBI single by Reese Wade to take a 1-0 lead. The Paladins left the bases loaded to end the inning. In the top of the second, Aaron Thompkins added a single through the right side to score a run for a 2-0 advantage.
Wofford had a double by Landon Bennett in the bottom of the second and Josh McKinney walked, however a double play ended the scoring chance. In the bottom of the third, Alex Lee and James Foster had hits and Clark Wise had an RBI single to left field for a 2-1 score. A single by Mac Doyle loaded the bases with one out. A ground out by Konstantine Diamaduros tied the game at 2-2.
Furman loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth. A sacrifice fly by Reese Wade scored one run for a 3-2 lead, but the Paladins left two on base at the end of the inning. Wofford had one hit by Clark Wise in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, the Paladins added two singles and a walk to load the bases with two outs. A hit by pitch scored one run to increase the lead to 4-2.
After a scoreless seventh, Wofford left one runner on base in the bottom of the eighth. After Furman went one-two-three in the top of the ninth, Wofford also went down in order in the bottom of the ninth for a 4-2 final score.
For Wofford, starter Drew Sheridan (1-2) went 5.2 innings with seven hits allowed, four runs scored and four strikeouts. Ryan Traylor threw 2.1 innings with only one hit allowed. Brandon Yarusi retired the side in order in the ninth with one strikeout.
Furman starter Tyler Wood (2-1) threw 6.1 innings and allowed two hits on seven hits with three strikeouts. Nate Smith went an inning with one strikeout. Jay Friedman worked two-thirds of an inning without allowing a base runner. Dylan Cole picked up his fourth save of the year by pitching the ninth with one strikeout.
The weekend series against Furman will conclude on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Next week Wofford will travel to Presbyterian College on Wednesday and will host The Citadel beginning on Friday night in a SoCon series.
