Baseball Falls 1-0 In Second Game At Elon

ELON, N.C. – On Sunday afternoon, Wofford and Elon continued a baseball game that was suspended due to rain on Saturday. Tied at 0-0 when resumed in the middle of the fifth inning, the Phoenix retired twelve batters in order and had a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth by Ryan Kinsella to take a 1-0 victory.

Wofford is now 14-18 on the season and 2-9 in the SoCon. Elon is 21-12 overall and 11-3 in conference play. The Terriers had only two hits in the game, one each by Clark Wise and Mac Doyle. The Phoenix had only four hits on the day and left eight runners stranded.

The Terriers had the first hit of the day in the top of the first by Clark Wise. Elon left one runner on base in the bottom of the first and the bottom of the third. In the top of the fourth, James Foster led off with a walk, but a double play erased the base runner. Mac Doyle walked as well, but was left on base.

Rain began to fall heavily in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Phoenix left two on base to end the inning. David Roney walked in the top of the fifth with one out, but was caught stealing on a wild pitch. The game was suspended due to rain in the middle of the fifth inning.

The game resumed on Sunday afternoon. Grant McCoury led off with a double and he moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, but he was left on base at the end of the fifth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Elon left two runners on base after a walk and a single by Sebastian Gomez.

Mac Doyle added a single for the Terriers in the top of the seventh, but a double play ended the Wofford half of the inning. Elon added a double from Neal Pritchard in the bottom of the eighth, but he was left on base. In the bottom of the ninth with one out, Ryan Kinsella hit a walk-off home run over the right field wall to win the game 1-0.

Wofford starter Brandon Yarusi went four innings without allowing a hit along with four strikeouts. Tom Dolinak (2-3) went 4.1 innings with one run allowed on four hits with two strikeouts.

Elon starter Ken Ferrer threw five innings with one hit allowed and three strikeouts. John Brebbia (7-0) threw four innings and allowed only one hit with one strikeout.

The three-game series at Elon will conclude at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Wofford returns home after the seven-game road swing on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. as the Terriers host UNC Asheville.
