Baseball Drops Series Finale 8-4 At Elon

ELON, N.C. – In the final game of the weekend series, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 8-4 by Elon on Sunday afternoon at Latham Park. The game was tied at four in the top of the fifth after a home run by Alex Lee for the Terriers, but the Phoenix scored the next four runs to secure the win and series sweep.

Wofford is now 14-19 on the season and 2-10 in the SoCon. Elon is 22-12 overall and 12-3 in conference play. The Terriers had two hits each from Alex Lee and Mac Doyle, while Konstantine Diamaduros had two RBIs. Ryan Kinsella led the Phoenix with three hits and five RBIs in the game.

The Terriers opened the game with a lead-off single by James Foster. He moved to third and scored on a single by Konstantine Diamaduros for a 1-0 lead. Elon started the bottom of the first with a walk and two singles to load the bases. A single up the middle by Ryan Kinsella scored two runs. A ground out by Sebastian Gomez drove in a third run and an RBI single by Alex Swim made it a 4-1 game after the first inning.

Wofford added a single by Taylor Rozier in the top of the second, but a double play ended the half inning. Elon left one on base in the bottom of the second. Alex Lee led off the third with a single and James Foster walked. They moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Clark Wise. A single by Mac Doyle scored Lee and a sacrifice fly hit by Konstantine Diamaduros cut the lead to 4-3.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Phoenix led off with a single and a walk but was unable to plate a run. Alex Lee hit a home run over the left field wall to open the fifth which tied the game at 5. It was Lee’s fifth career home run and first of the season. Mac Doyle had a two-out triple and two walks loaded the bases, but all three runners were stranded.

Elon put runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the fifth. A triple by Ryan Kinsella down the right line scored two runs to give the Phoenix a 6-4 lead. An RBI single by Sebastian Gomez made it a 7-4 game. With the bases loaded, a strikeout ended the fifth inning.

The Phoenix added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Ryan Kinsella hit a double to the gap in left field that scored Neal Pritchard from first for an 8-4 lead. After the Terriers were retired in order in the top of the seventh, the Phoenix left one on base in the bottom of the seventh.

Wofford had one hit in the top of the eighth by Josh McKinney and the Phoenix were retired in order in the bottom half of the inning. In the top of the ninth, Alex Lee was hit by a pitch with two outs and then James Foster walked. A ground out ended the game with two left on base for the Terriers and an 8-4 final score.

In his first career start for Wofford, Alex Wilson (0-1) went four innings and allowed five runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Bobby Streisel threw an inning and allowed two runs on three hits with one strikeout. Drew Sheridan went an inning with one run on two hits and two strikeouts. John Cornely threw two innings and did not allow a hit with one strikeout.

Elon starter Jared Kernodle went 4.2 innings with seven hits and four runs allowed with one strikeout. David Whitehead (3-0) threw 2.1 innings and did not allow a hit with two strikeouts. Greg Amorosso went an inning and allowed one hit, while Mitch Connor threw the ninth and did not allow a hit.

Wofford returns home after the seven-game road swing on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. as the Terriers host UNC Asheville. Next weekend Wofford will host Davidson for a three-game series.
