Baseball Drops Series Finale to Appalachian State 6-2

BOONE, N.C. – In the final game of the weekend series, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 6-2 by Appalachian State at Beaver Field at Jim and Bettie Smith Stadium. The Mountaineers scored four runs in the sixth inning to break open the game.

Wofford is now 14-15 on the season and 2-7 in the SoCon. Appalachian State is 15-13 overall and 4-8 in conference play. The Terriers were led by Konstantine Diamaduros with two extra base hits and Alex Lee with three singles. The Mountaineers had four hits and an RBI from Tyler Zupcic.

The Mountaineers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when two runners were on base after an error and a walk. Tyler Tewell hit a double to center field to bring both home for a 2-0 lead. Wofford had hits from Alex Lee and James Foster in the top of the third, but were unable to plate a run.

In the bottom of the third, Appalachian State had runners at second and third with one out, but neither scored. The Mountaineers added two more base hits in the bottom of the fifth but the score remained 2-0 at the end of five.

Wofford got on the board in the top of the sixth. Mac Doyle struck out, but got to first on a wild pitch. Konstantine Diamaduros hit a ball off the right field wall for a triple which scored Doyle for a 2-1 game. Appalachian State had two singles to open the bottom of the sixth and a balk moved them into scoring position. With one out, a walk loaded the bases and a single by Doug Jones drove in two runs for a 4-1 lead. Singles by Tyler Zupcic and Trey Holmes added two more runs to extend the lead to 6-1.

Alex Lee led off the top of the eighth with a single for the Terriers, but the top of the line-up was retired in order. In the bottom of the eighth, the Mountaineers had one hit, but the runner was caught stealing. Wofford opened the ninth with a double down the right line by Konstantine Diamaduros. Josh McKinney added a single and David Roney drove in Diamaduros with a single to cut the lead to 6-2. Another single by Alex Lee loaded the bases with two out, but the game ended with all three stranded.

Wofford starter Tom Dolinak (2-2) went 5.1 innings and allowed nine hits and six runs, four of which were earned. He also had five strikeouts. Ryan Traylor gave up two hits and had one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning. Bobby Streisel pitched the seventh and eighth innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts.

Appalachian State starter Seth Grant (2-4) threw seven innings and allowed only one run on five hits while striking out four. David Port allowed one hit in the eighth inning. Zach Joyce allowed one hit and a run. Taylor Miller allowed three hits and struck out one in the ninth.

The Mountaineers swept the weekend series and Wofford has not won in Boone since 2005. On Tuesday the Terriers will travel to Duke for a 6:00 p.m. game before heading to Elon next weekend.
