Baseball Falls 9-3 To #1 Ranked South Carolina

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Wednesday night, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 9-3 by South Carolina at Russell C. King Field. The Gamecocks are currently ranked first in the nation by Collegiate Baseball and second by Baseball America. The Terriers scattered ten hits during the game.

Wofford is now 19-26 on the season and South Carolina is 36-8. The Terriers were led by James Foster with three hits and David Roney with a two-run homer. The Gmecocks were led by Christian Walker with four hits on the day.

The Gamecocks took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI single from Christian Walker and a passed ball. Wofford had two runners on base in the bottom of the first after a single by James Foster and a walk to Konstantine Diamaduros, but both were stranded. In the second inning, both teams left one runner one base.

In the top of the third, South Carolina added a run after a double by Christian Walker and a single by Brady Thomas drove him in for a 3-0 lead. The Gamecocks added a run in the top of the fourth Evan Marzilli was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on an error for a 4-0 advantage.

South Carolina loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with one out. A walk brought home one runner, while a sacrifice fly by Adrian Morales made it a 6-0 game. In the bottom of the sixth, Landon Bennett led off with a single and then David Roney blasted a ball over the fence in right field for a 6-2 score.

The Gamecocks added a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI by former Terrier Jake Williams to push the lead to 7-2. In the top of the eighth, South Carolina added two more runs on a RBI single by Robert Beary and a sacrifice fly by Scott Wingo for a 9-2 score. In the bottom of the ninth, James Foster walked and moved to second on a passed ball. A double by Mac Doyle scored Foster to make it a 9-3 game before a double play ended the contest.

Wofford starter Drew Sheridan (1-4) threw two innings and allowed two runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Pete Noordsy went 2.1 innings with four runs scored on five hits. Bobby Streisel threw 1.2 innings and allowed only one hit with one strikeout. Jesse Morris went an inning and gave up one run on two hits. Brandon Yaursi allowed two runs on two hits with a strikeout. Tom Dolinak pitched the ninth and allowed only one hit and added one strikeout.

South Carolina starter Adam Westmoreland (1-1) went 5.1 innings and gave up two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Steven Neff threw 1.1 innings and allowed one hit. Jose Mata went 1.2 innings with two hits allowed and two strikeouts. Bryan Harper threw the final two-third of an inning and allowed one run on one hit.

Wofford will travel to Statesboro for a three-game series against Georgia Southern beginning on Friday night. The next home game for the Terriers will be May 20 against UNC Greensboro.
