STATESBORO, Ga. – The Wofford baseball team won 7-2 over Georgia Southern on Friday night at Clements Stadium. The Terriers scored five runs in the sixth inning to build a 7-0 lead and the Eagles were held to only five hits on the night.
Wofford is now 20-26 on the season and 7-15 in the Southern Conference. Georgia Southern is 26-20 overall and 13-9 in the conference. Cash Collins allowed only one unearned run in seven innings on the mound, while David Roney had four hits to lead the Terriers. James Foster added two RBIs. The Eagles were led by Shawn Payne with one hit and an RBI.
The Terriers opened the game with a single by James Foster. After he stole second, Mac Doyle hit a double to right center to score Foster for a 1-0 lead. Josh McKinney added a two-out RBI single for a 2-0 score. Georgia Southern left two on base to end the first inning.
Neither team added a hit in the second or third inning. In the top of the fourth, David Roney singled and Landon Bennett walked, but both were left on base. Georgia Southern had two players reach on walks in the bottom of the fourth, but two strikeouts ended the inning.
The Eagles added a hit in the bottom of the fifth inning. Wofford had Konstantine Diamaduros reach on an error to lead off the sixth inning. David Roney added a single and both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly by Landon Bennett scored one run and a throw to third that was off the mark allowed Roney to score for a 4-0 lead. With two outs, Matt Moore walked and stole second and third base. Alex Lee walked and stole second. James Foster then hit a single to left field that scored both runners for a 6-0 advantage. Foster stole second and scored on an RBI single by Clark Wise to make it a 7-0 game in the middle of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh, Josh McKinney reached on an error and David Roney singled. A double play left one on base at the stretch. The Eagles had two players reach base on a walk an error in the bottom of the seventh. A single by Ben Morgan loaded the bases with nobody out. A sacrifice fly by Stryker Brown drove in the first run of the day for Georgia Southern. Two runners were left on base at the end of seven with a 7-1 score.
Wofford left one runner on base in the top of the eighth. Georgia Southern had runners on the corners with one out in the bottom. A single by Shawn Payne drove in one run to make it a 7-2 game. A walk loaded the bases, but a shallow fly ball was out two and a runner was thrown out at home to end the eighth.
Josh McKinney added a double for the Terriers in the top of the ninth. David Roney walked, but both runners were left on base. The Eagles had one runner reach base in the bottom of the ninth, but the runner was stranded for a 7-2 final score.
Wofford starter Cash Collins (8-2) threw seven innings and allowed three hits and one unearned run with five strikeouts. Bobby Streisel went the eighth and gave up one run on one hit. John Cornely allowed one hit and had one strikeout in the ninth.
Georgia Southern starter Chris Beck (6-3) went four innings and allowed five hits and two runs with four strikeouts. Jarret Leverett threw 1.1 innings with two unearned runs and one hit allowed along with a strikeout. Josh Adams worked a third of an inning and allowed two runs. Colin Snow added a third of an inning with two hits and a run allowed. Taylor Burke went the final three innings and allowed two hits.
The win was the 20th of the season for the Terriers. Wofford will continue the series against Georgia Southern on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The next home game for the Terriers will be May 20 against UNC Greensboro.
