Baseball Falls 12-4 At Georgia Southern

STATESBORO, Ga. – In the second game of the weekend series, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 12-4 by Georgia Southern at Clements Stadium. There were a total of ten errors in the game and eight of the Eagles’ runs were unearned as they tied the series.

Wofford is now 20-27 on the season and 7-16 in the Southern Conference. Georgia Southern is 27-20 overall and 14-9 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Konstantine Diamaduros with three hits and David Roney with a two-run homer. The Eagles were led by Shawn Payne and Eric Phillips with three hits and Michael Burress with four RBIs.

The Terriers had a single by Clark Wise in the top of the first and he stole second. Konstantine Diamaduros scored Wise with an RBI single through the right side for an early 1-0 lead. Georgia Southern had runners on second and third after a double by Victor Roache in the bottom of the first. A ground out tied the game at 1-1 and the Eagles took the lead with an RBI double by Tom Richardson for a 2-1 lead.

Each team left one runner on base in the second inning. In the bottom of the third, Tom Richardson added an RBI single with two outs to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Wofford was able to tie the game at three in the top of the fourth. Mac Doyle reached on an error and with two outs, David Roney hit a ball over the right field wall for his fourth home run of the season.

The Eagles regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Arthur Owens reached on an error and moved to third after a double by Shawn Payne. A sacrifice fly by Michael Burress made it a 4-3 game. Payne scored on a throwing error to extend the lead to 5-3. Eric Phillips drove a ball deep to left field, but Clark Wise reached over the wall to rob him of a home run to end the inning.

After a scoreless fifth inning, the Terriers had runners on the corners after a walk to Mac Doyle and a single by Konstantine Diamaduros. However Wofford was unable to score a run in their half of the sixth inning. The Eagles added a run in the bottom of the sixth when an error allowed a runner to score from third on a fielder’s choice. Another error on a run-down allowed two runs to score for an 8-3 lead. One more run scored in the inning to take a 9-3 lead at the end of the inning.

Wofford had two runners on base in the top of the seventh, but a double play ended the half inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Michael Burress hit a three-run homer over the wall in right field to increase the lead to 12-3.

The Terriers added one run in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Josh McKinney that scored Clark Wise for a 12-4 score. Georgia Southern left the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth. In the top of the ninth, Wofford left one on base after a double play for the 12-4 final score.

Wofford starter Tom Dolinak (3-6) threw five innings and allowed five runs (only one earned) on six hits with two strikeouts. Jesse Morris worked a third of an inning and allowed two hits and four unearned runs. Eric Eck threw an inning and gave up three runs on four hits with a strikeout. Alex Wilson went the final 1.1 innings and allowed two hits with a strikeout.

Georgia Southern starter Justin Hess (3-2) went five innings and allowed three runs on five hits with one strikeout. Will Middour threw 1.1 innings without allowing a hit and one strikeout. Jarret Leverett went 1.2 innings and allowed one hit and one run with a strikeout. Colin Snow pitched the ninth and did not allow a hit.

Wofford will complete the series against Georgia Southern on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. On Tuesday, Wofford will play at USC Upstate, a game that was added to schedule as a rain date. The next home game for the Terriers will be May 20 against UNC Greensboro.
