Terriers Drop SoCon Opener 3-1 to Eagles

STATESBORO, GA. -- The Wofford volleyball team dropped their Southern Conference opener on the road at Georgia Southern in the Old Hanner Gym 3-1 (22-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-19) Thursday night.

In the first set, the Terriers jumped out to 9-7 lead early in the match and would pull away to 12-9 before the Eagles mounted a comeback.  Georgia Southern used a 4-1 run to force a 13-13 tie.  Wofford would edge ahead to take an 18-15 lead only to see Georgia Southern once again rally to force a tie at 20.  The Terriers would finish the set taking five of the final seven points to earn the 25-22 win.

Set two saw the Eagles pull ahead with an early 8-3 lead.  Wofford was able to pull within one twice, 12-11 and 13-12, but service errors gave Georgia Southern a spark as they edged away with a 19-14 lead. The Eagles went on to claim the set 25-19 to even the match at one set apiece. 

Georgia Southern broke a tie at two in the third set with a 7-0 run to take a 9-2 lead.  Wofford would pulled within four points, 10-6, but again, a service error plagued their comeback.  The Eagles would go on to take the set 25-15 and take a 2-1 advantage in the match.

In the fourth set, the Eagles opened up with a 4-1 lead, but the Terriers came out of a timeout and battled back to tie the match at four.  Wofford took a quick 7-5 lead only to see the Georgia Southern mount a 5-0 run to take a 10-7 lead.  Back-to-back Terrier hitting errors sparked the Eagles run.  Wofford pulled within three, four times, 14-11, 15-12, 16-13 and 22-19, but Georgia Southern would hold on to take the set 25-19 and clinch the match.

Amanda Liguori led the Terriers with 13 kills, while Arden Anderson and Rachel Woodlee followed with 11 kills.  Anderson added a solo block, while Wendy Burnett had two block assists.  Bekah Dorsey handed out 34 assists, while Reagan Styles collected a match-high 23 digs.  

Wofford was plagued by service errors throughout the match as the Terriers had 14 errors compared to six for the Eagles.

Wofford falls to 10-5 overall and will travel to Davidson for the next match Saturday at 7 p.m.
