Bulldogs Bounce Terriers, 82-59

BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – The Wofford women’s basketball teams drops an 82-59 road contest in the Pete Hanna Center to Samford Sunday afternoon in a Southern Conference game.
 
The loss drops the Terriers to 9-7 overall and 2-5 in the SoCon, while the Bulldogs improve to 10-6, and 5-2.
 
Neither team could pull ahead until, Samford went on an 8-0 sparked by a jumper by Shelby Campbell and a three by Christy Robinson to give the Bulldogs a 13-6 lead with 12:57 to play in the first half. The run continued as the Bulldogs pulled ahead 20-8 with eight straight points from Jazmine Martin with just over ten minutes remaining.
 
Wofford cut the lead to 24-14 on a Daniella Motley basket with 9:15 remaining, but Samford pushed the lead back to 33-18 on a Hannah Dawson with 6:29 on the clock that capped off a 9-4 run.
 
Wofford went on a 5-0 run with free throws from Erin Frost and a three from Mariah Masalin with 4:31 on the clock to pull within ten points, 33-23.  Masalin’s three was the final bucket of the half, as the Terriers held the Bulldogs without a basket over the final 6:29 of the first half.
 
Wofford went 8-of-24, 33 percent, in the first half from the floor and 1-of-3 from three, while Samford was 12-of-24, 50 percent, overall and 2-of-9, 22 percent, from three.  Both teams made all their free throws as the Terriers were, 6-of-6, and the Bulldogs were 7-of-7.
 
Following the break, April Moorhouse had the first six points for the Terriers as they cut the lead to 38-29 two and a half minutes into play.  The Bulldogs responded with a 14-2 run with four points from Taylor Reece to extend their lead to 52-31 with 13:10 remaining.
 
After Wofford trimmed into the lead, Samford again pushed the lead back to 21 points, 59-38, following four points from Shelby Campbell with just over ten minutes to play.
 
Down 61-40, Wofford went on a 6-0 with four points from Erin Frost including a three to cut the lead to 61-46 with just over seven minutes left.
 
But, Samford responded as the lead hit 21 points, 76-55, with just over two to play on a Jazmine Martin, as the Bulldogs took the game 82-59.
 
Wofford finished the game 41 percent from the floor, 19-of-46, 25 percent from three and 95 percent from the line, 19-of-20.  It was the Terriers best shooting performance from the line on the season.  Samford ended the game, 56 percent overall, 30-of-53, 29 percent from long range, and 86 percent from free throw line.
 
Samford forced 20 Wofford turnovers leading to 25 points, while the Terriers scored seven points off of 13 Bulldog turnovers.
 
Motley led all scorers with 19 points; she was 8-of-13 from the field setting a new season-high for field goals made.  Moorhouse followed for the Terriers with ten points, while Frost had eight points.  Motley, Rachel Brittenham and Morgan Wrightson all had a team-high four rebounds.
 
Samford placed five players in double-figures with Reece leading the way with 16 points.  Martin trailed with 15 points, while Dawson chipped in 13 points.  Christy Robinson and Campbell  added 12 and 11 points respectively for the Bulldogs.  Dawson also had a game-high eight rebounds.
 
Wofford gave up double-digit points to five players for the first time since February 27, 2010 against Western Carolina.
 
Wofford returns home to the Benjamin Johnson Arena for games against Appalachian State on January 18 at 6 p.m. and against the College of Charleston on January 21 at 2 p.m.
