Second Half Dooms Terriers Against Eagles in 56-48 Loss

STATESBORO, GA. – The Wofford women’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a five minute second half scoring drought as they fell 56-48 to Georgia Southern in the Hanner Fieldhouse Monday night in their first game following the Christmas Break.
 
Wofford (8-5, 1-3) only managed 19 second half points compared to 27 for Georgia Southern (5-8, 1-3).  The Terriers went 5:05 without a basket in the second half from the 11:06 mark to the 6:01 mark.
 
Wofford got out to an early 8-4 lead with four points from Daniella Motley, but the Eagles tied the game on a 4-0 run when Mimi DuBose was fouled shooting a three.  She made two of her three free throws.
 
With the score knotted at ten, the Terriers went on a 4-0 run with baskets from Logan Morris and Motley to give the Terriers a 14-10 lead with 12:40 to play in the half.
 
Wofford extended its lead to 17-12, before Georgia Southern mounted a 9-2 run to take a 22-19 lead on a Janay Wilson layup and two free throws from DuBose with 7:34 on the clock.
 
Back-to-back baskets from Moorhouse ended the run, but DuBose responded with a three to take a 25-23 lead on the next possession.
 
With score tied at 25, the Eagles went on a 4-0 run to pull away 29-25 with just over four minutes remaining in the half, but Wofford answered with baskets on a jumper from Motley and a fast-break layup from Morris tied the game at 29 two minutes later.  Neither team scored a basket over the final two minutes as the teams went into the locker room tied at 29.
 
Wofford finished the half 46 percent from the floor and 60 percent from the line.  The Terriers went 0-for-4 from behind the arc in the half.  Georgia Southern was 40 percent in the half, 33 percent from three and 89 percent from the free throw line, 8-of-9.
 
Georgia Southern came out of the locker rooms with a 3-0 run before Moorhouse scored the first Wofford points of the half on an offensive rebound and putback three minutes into play.
 
The Eagles followed with a 10-2 run to take a nine point lead, 42-33 with just over 12 minutes to play in the game.  Six points from Tashayla Steede highlighted the Georiga Southern run.
 
Morgan Wrightson knocked down a corner three to end the run cut the lead to six, but Jordi Cook answered with a three for the Eagles to push the lead right back to nine points, 45-36, with ten and half minutes left in the game.
 
The lead hit double-digits, 48-36, on a Meredyth Frye drive and layup and a Steede free throw at the eight-minute mark.  Motley cut the lead back to 48-38 with a basket two minutes later that ended a five-minute scoring drought for the Terriers.
 
Wofford chipped away at the lead, 48-42, with baskets by Wrightson and Motley with just over three minutes remaining.  Free throws by Wrightson and Morris pulled the Terriers within two points, 48-46, but Dubose sank a three with 1:47 on the clock to push the lead back to five points, 51-46.
 
With Georgia Southern up 51-46, Frye was fouled 40 feet from the basket while launching a three with one second on the shot clock.  She converted two of the three free throws give the Eagles a, seven-point lead, 53-46.  Wofford couldn’t complete the comeback as they fell 56-48.
 
Wofford finished the game 36 percent from the floor, ten percent from three and 82 percent from the free throw line.  Georgia Southern went 40 percent overall, 30 percent from long range and 68 percent from the line.
 
Motley led Wofford with 15 points and ten rebounds for her third double-double of the season and fifth of her career.  Moorhouse followed with 12 points, ten of which game in the first half.  She also had nine rebounds.  Wrightson chipped in 11 points and made the only Terrier three in the game.
 
Frye and Steede paced the Eagles with 11 points apiece, and DuBose added ten points.
 
The Terriers return to the Benjamin Johnson Arena for their first game at home in 2012 when they host Davidson at 6 p.m. in a week on Monday, January 9.
