Cougars Comeback to Earn 56-55 Win Over Terriers

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women’s basketball team suffered its second consecutive one-point loss coming up short, 56-55, to the College of Charleston Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
 
Wofford jumped to out an early three-point lead 10-7 with 15:16 to play in the half on Morgan Wrightson three, but CofC cut the margin to 10-9 two minutes later on a jumper by Mikaela Hopkins.
 
Wofford responded with a 12-0 run to take a 22-9 with just under ten minutes to play in the first half.  Threes from Wrightson and Erin Frost sparked the Terrier run.
 
Trailing, 24-23 with 7:59 on the clock, the Cougars went on a 6-0 run over the next minute and a half to cut the lead to five points, 24-19. Wofford held off the CofC run at the lead as they took a 34-30 lead into the locker rooms.
 
Just over three minutes to play into the second half, the Cougars tied the game at 36 on a jumper from Alyssa Frye.  The two teams traded the lead until Wofford pulled a head 43-40 on a Wrightson layup with 11:13 to play in the game.
 
Wofford took a five-point lead, 49-44, with a jumper from Logan Morris, but CofC responded with a 5-0 run to tie the game at 49 with 3:29 remaining.  After the Terriers took a brief lead, the Cougars took a 53-52 lead on two foul shots from Alexis Hicks with a minute and a half left.
 
The Cougars pulled away 56-52 with three foul shots from Latisha Harris, but Frost knocked down a three at buzzer to give the Terriers to give the game a one-point margin, 56-55.  The Cougars didn’t make a field goal from the 3:29 mark with all of their final six points coming from the line.
 
Wofford finished the game 34 percent from the floor, 33 percent from three and 63 percent from the line, 5-of-8.  The College of Charleston ended 40 percent overall, 18 percent from three and 67 percent from the line, 16-of-24.  The Cougars held a 20-12 margin in fouls.
 
Wofford scored 21 points off of 21 CofC turnovers, while the Cougars only scored nine points off of 16 Terrier turnovers.  CofC out-rebounded Wofford 44-35 including 18-13 on the offensive glass.
 
Wrightson scored a team-high 14 points, 12 of which came in the first half.  Rachel Brittenham added ten points and five assists.  Daniella Motley chipped in nine points.
 
Harris led the Cougars with a game-high 16 points.  She also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.  Jillian Brown handed out ten assists.  It was the first time since 2001 Wofford gave up ten or more assists to an opponent.
 
Wofford (9-9, 2-7) suffers their second straight one-point lost after falling to App State 59-58 Wednesday.  The College of Charleston (4-15, 3-7) completes the season sweep against the Terriers after winning the first meeting 49-44 on December 5.
 
Wofford travels to Furman on January 23 at 7 p.m.
