GREENVILLE, S.C. – Morgan Wrightson turned in her second 20-point game of the year with 22 points, but the Wofford women’s basketball team fell 75-66 to Furman Monday in Timmons Arena.
Wofford (9-10, 2-8) has now lost four of its last five games by less than ten points. With the win, Furman improves to 11-8 overall and 7-3 in SoCon play.
Wofford got out early, 4-2, only to see the Paladins come back with a 7-0 run to take a 9-4 lead. Wofford ended the run with Logan Morris three to cut the lead to 9-7 with 15:05 to play.
Furman answered with an 8-2 run highlighted by two Reagan Thompson threes to pull away 19-9 with just under 13 minutes to play. Neither team scored until two minutes later when Morris ended the run with her second three of the half to trim the Paladin lead to 19-12.
Morris’ three sparked a 6-0 run as Daniella Motley converted a free throw and Mariah Masalin made a back-door layup to pull the Terriers within four points, 19-15 with 9:25 left in the half.
Ayanna Randolph made two free throws to end a 6:20 second drought that sparked a 6-0 run for the Paladins as they pulled ahead 25-15 at the six-minute mark. An April Moorhouse putback ended a 4:50 scoring drought for the Terriers and made it an eight-point game, 25-17, with 4:35 to play.
Wofford could not close the gap as the two teams went into the locker rooms trailing 31-23. The Terriers were 24 percent from the floor, 50 percent from three and made all five of their free throw attempts. The Paladins went 34 percent overall, 33 percent from three and 7-of-13 from the line.
Furman came out and pushed the lead to 40-29 with four point from Teshia Griswold just under two minutes into action, but Wofford responded with two free throws from Wrightson and a Moorhouse lay-in to pull within seven, 40-33, with 16:39 showing on the clock.
Wrightson and Moorhouse’s points sparked a 7-2 run for the Terriers as they scored two fast break baskets on turnovers to make it 42-39 with 15:39 to play. Furman responded with a three-point play from Randolph and a free throw by Sarah Durdaller to push the lead back to 46-39 a minute later.
Furman mounted a 7-2 run to take a 53-41 lead highlighted by Durdaller layup with 12:10 to play, and pulled away 57-43 as Wofford went 6:43 seconds without a field goal. Wrightson made a layup at the eight and half minute mark to pull the Terriers within 13 points, 58-45.
Wofford pulled within nine points, 58-49, when Wrightson’s basket sparked a 6-0 Terrier run with seven and a half minutes to play. Following two Paladin free throws, Rachel Brittenham knocked down a three to pull Wofford within eight points, 60-52.
Furman pushed the lead back to double-digits, 68-54, with an 8-2 run with just over five minutes to play, and Wofford was never able to make a run at the lead over the final five minutes as the Paladins held on for the nine-point win, 75-66.
Wofford finished the game 41 percent overall, 43 percent from three and 71 percent from the free throw line, while Furman ended 38 percent from the floor, 31 percent from three and 66 percent from the line.
Wrightson paced the Terriers with 22 points, a new caree-high as a Terrier. It was her second 20-point game of the season and fourth turned in by a Terrier on the season; she had 21 against North Carolina Central on November 14.
Morris added 12 points in only 19 minutes on the floor because of foul trouble. She was 5-of-6 overall and 2-of-2 from three. Moorhouse chipped in 11 points and gave the Terriers their 13th game of the season with three or more players in double-figures. Moorhouse also had a team-high eight rebounds. Brittenham finished with nine points and five assists.
Furman placed four in double-figures, as Brittany Hodges led them with 15 points, and Thompson followed with 14. Janice Roberts added 11, and Murphy had ten points. Murphy also had a game-high nine assists.
Wofford stays on the road for to Western Carolina on January 28 at 2 p.m. before returning home against Georgia Southern on January 30 at 4 p.m.
