CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Logan Morris’ 16 points, one point shy of her career-high, wasn’t enough as Wofford came up short on the road to Western Carolina, 69-60, Saturday afternoon in the Ramsey Center in a Southern Conference game.
It was the second consecutive game Morris scored in double-figures and sixth time she has led the Terriers in scoring this season. She finished the game 6-of-9 from the floor and made both of her free throw attempts. She was also 2-of-3 from behind the arc.
In a first half that saw four lead changes and four ties, the Terriers took a 13-9 lead with just under nine minutes into action on a Morgan Wrightson three, but Western rallied a took a 16-14 lead on a three from Kaila’Shea Menendez two minutes later.
With the score tied at 20, the Catamounts went on a 7-0 to pull ahead 27-20 before a Morris layup ended the run. Morris’ basket ended a four-minute scoreless streak for the Terriers, as Wofford only managed four points, all from Morris, over the final 6:44 of the half. The scoring drought gave Western Carolina and eight point half time lead, 32-24.
The Catamounts came out of the half and pushed their lead to ten points, 34-24, on the first possession, but Wofford rallied and cut the lead in half, 47-42, on two free throws from Morris at the ten-minute mark. However, Western Carolina answered with an 8-0 run to extend their lead to 13 points, 55-42, with 7:39 left.
Again, Wofford chipped away at the lead as a Wrightson layup brought the Terriers within four points, 61-57, with 1:49 remaining, but the Terriers couldn’t complete the comeback as they fell 69-60 to the Catamounts (7-13, 2-9). Wofford (9-11, 2-9) has now lost six straight, five of which have been by less than ten points.
Wofford outshot Western Carolina from the floor and from three, 46 percent to 44 percent and 56 percent to 40 percent in the game. The Terriers converted 13 of their 22 free throws, while the Catamounts made 17 of their 24 attempts from the line.
Western Carolina scored 29 points off of 25 Wofford turnovers, while the Terriers only scored 13 points off of 24 Catamount turnovers. Western Carolina’s bench outscored the Wofford bench 28-8.
Morris’ 16 points paced the Terriers offensively, while Wrightson followed with 15 points, eight of which came from the line. April Moorhouse added 12 points and gave the Terriers their 14th game of the season with three or more players in double-figures. Daniella Motley had a team-high eight rebounds, as the SoCon leader in assists, Rachel Brittenham, recorded six assists.
Menendez led all scorers in the game with 19 points, and Alex Abraham followed with ten points for the Catamounts.
Wofford returns to the Benjamin Johnson Arena for a three game-home stand starting with Georgia Southern on January 30 at 4 p.m. and Chattanooga on February 4 at 6 p.m. Samford ends the home stand on February 6 at 6 p.m. which will air on ESPN3 as part of the SoCon Game of the Week
