Men’s Basketball Downs College of Charleston 75-58

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Thursday night, the Wofford men’s basketball team hit eleven three pointers on the way to a 75-58 win over the College of Charleston at Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Terriers were led by Karl Cochran with a career-high 21 points, which included six three pointers and a dunk.

Wofford is now 9-6 on the season and 2-1 in the Southern Conference, while the College of Charleston is 10-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play. In addition to Cochran’s 21 points, Kevin Giltner scored 15 points. Brad Loesing added 13 points and Drew Crowell scored 11 points. Lee Skinner led the team with eight rebounds. The Cougars were led by Andrew Lawrence with 14 points and Trent Wiedeman with ten points and seven rebounds.

“The story of the game was that we held a very explosive College of Charleston offense to only 58 points,” said Wofford head coach Mike Young. “That is a feather in our cap. We played a great basketball game and were very cohesive. We paid great attention to detail and how we wanted to guard different things. We deserved to win. We out-rebounded them by eleven and there are a lot of positives to take away from this one.”

The Terriers opened the game with a three by Brad Loesing. A three pointer by Karl Cochran gave Wofford an 8-5 advantage. With 16:40 on the clock, Karl Cochran hit another three for an 11-7 lead and the lead extended with a third three pointer by Cochran for a 14-7 score with 15:40 remaining in the first half. Jarell Byrd added a three as Wofford pushed the lead to 17-9 seven minutes into the half.

Karl Cochran hit his fourth three pointer of the first half to give the Terriers a 20-10 advantage. The Cougars then hit back-to-back threes to cut the lead to 20-16 before a lay-up by Drew Crowell ended the quick run. The College of Charleston cut the lead to one at 22-21 as part of an 11-2 run. Karl Cochran hit another three for a 25-21 score.

A three by Brad Loesing with 6:30 on the clock gave Wofford a 28-23 lead. The Terriers then used a three by Jarell Byrd and a floater by Brad Loesing for a 35-35 lead with four minutes left in the half. Wofford pushed it to 39-27, but the Cougars scored the last five points of the half for a 39-32 score at the break.

The Cougars hit two free throws to open the second half. Back-to-back threes by Anthony Stitt cut the lead to 43-40 after four minutes of play. A three by Kevin Giltner gave the Terriers a 48-40 advantage with 15:13 on the clock. After taking a 50-40 lead, the Cougars answered with a three. A three by Karl Cochran gave Wofford a 58-47 lead with nine minutes left, but the Cougars again answered with a three.

After the College of Charleston cut the lead to seven, Wofford answered with a break-away dunk by Karl Cochran and an easy three-on-one lay-up by Kevin Giltner for a 64-53 advantage with 6:32 left in the half. Drew Crowell hit a lay-up and free throw with 3:24 on the clock to give Wofford a 67-56 lead with 3:24 remaining in the game. Brad Loesing and Kevin Giltner combined to hit six straight free throws for a 73-58 lead with only 1:25 on the clock. Drew Crowell added a lay-up for a 75-58 final score.

The Terriers shot 45.6% from the floor for the evening, while the College of Charleston shot 38.9% overall.  Wofford finished 11-28 from behind the arc. The Cougars went 10-of-25 from three. Wofford was 12-of-15 from the free throw line, while the College of Charleston went 6-of-9 from the charity stripe. The Terriers had a 37 to 26 advantage on the boards, which included 25 defensive rebounds.

Brad Loesing set the school record with his 112 career start. He broke the mark previously held by Greg O’Dell, who started in 111 games from 1988-92.

The Terriers will be on the road on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Western Carolina. The game will be broadcast locally on MY40 in the Greenville/Spartanburg/Asheville/Anderson market. Wofford’s next home game will be Saturday, January 14 against Georgia Southern at 7:00 p.m.
