Terriers Snap 13-Match Losing Streak to Mountaineers With 3-0 Win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford volleyball team snapped a 13-match losing streak to Appalachian State with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-21) win in a Southern Conference match inside the Benjamin Johnson Arena Friday night.
 
Wofford (11-8, 2-5) had not defeated the Mountaineers (5-16, 1-6) since October 26, 2001.  The Terriers had not won at home since September 21, 2001.
 
The two teams traded points throughout the opening set, until the Terriers broke a tie at 15 with a 3-0 run to take an 18-15 lead.  Wofford pushed the lead to 22-17, but App State cut the lead to 23-20.  Wofford took the set with a kill and a Mountaineer ball handling error.
 
In the second set, Wofford jumped out to an early 10-4 lead.   Wofford extended the lead to 19-9 en route 25-16 win.
 
The Mountaineers opened the third set with a 13-7 lead, but Wofford went on a 5-1 run to trim the App State lead to 14-12.  The Terriers flipped a 17-15 deficit into a 21-17 lead with a 5-0.  The Mountaineers fought and cut the lead to 23-21, but the Terriers ended the set and the match with after a kill an a service ace to earn the 25-21 win.
 
Wofford outhit App State .231 to .123 and held a 10-4 advantage in blocks. 
 
Amanda Liguori led Wofford with 13 kills and 18.5 points as she added four service aces and three block assists.  Wendy Burnett added seven kills, while Rachel Woodlee and Taylor Baird followed with six kills apiece.  Burnett paced the team with five blocks assists.  Baird had four block assists.  Reagan Styles picked up a team-high ten digs in the match, while Bekah Dorsey handed out 32 assists.
 
Lauren Gray led the Mountaineer attack with 11 kills, while Dalton Tolliver followed with ten kills.  Lauren Brown passed out 24 assists, and Courtney Rhein collected a match-high 21 digs.
 
Wofford returns to action Saturday at 6 p.m. with Western Carolina in the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
