SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Led by Amanda Liguori and Rachel Woodlee, who had 14 kills apiece, the Wofford volleyball team rallied to beat Western Carolina 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-19) Saturday night in a Southern Conference match in the Benjamin Johnson Arena.
Wendy Burnett added 13 kills and a .360 hitting percentage for the Wofford attack. Arden Anderson tallied eight kills on 18 swings with no errors for .444 hitting percentage. Burnett accounted for 17.5 point as she added six total blocks, five block assists and one solo block. Anderson and Woodlee recorded four block assists, as well. Bekah Dorsey had a match-high 45 asssits and picked up ten digs to earn her team leading seventh double-double of the season. Regan Styles tied for a match-high with 22 digs.
Caitlin Piechota was the lone Catamount to record double-digit kills as she notched 13 kills. She also collected 12 digs to record a double-double. Morgan Cochran tied for a match-high with 22 digs, while Tina Nazario handed out 35 assists.
In the opening set, Western Carolina took the early lead, 10—6. Wofford was able to cut the margin to 11-9, but the Catamounts regained control as they extended the lead to eight points, 20-12. Western Carolina went on the claim the first set 25-20.
With the second set tied at eight, Wofford when on a 3-0 run to take an 11-8 lead. Western Carolina fought back to tie the set at 12, but the Terriers responded with a 7-0 lead to pull out to a 19-12 lead. Wofford went on to take the second set 25-18.
Wofford broke a tie at eight in the third set with a 4-0 run to take a 12-8 lead. The Terriers held the five-point lead until the end of the set as took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-18 set three win.
In the fourth set, Western Carolina took an early 13-9 lead. Wofford mounted an 8-2 run as they took a 17-15 lead. Western cut the lead to one twice, 18-17 and 19-18, but Wofford ended the set with six of the final seven points to claim the set 25-19 and win the match.
Wofford outhit Western Carolina .250 to .142 as they had 62 kills compared to 40 kills for the Catamounts. Both teams had high blocks numbers as the Terriers had 11.5 compared to 11 blocks for Western Carolina.
With the win, the Terriers improve to 12-8 overall and 3-5 in the Southern Conference, while the Catamounts fall to 7-16 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
It is the first time since 2008 Wofford has won back-to-back SoCon games as they defeated App State 3-0 Friday.
Wofford travels to Elon on Friday, October 19 for its next match and follows with a match at UNCG on Saturday, October 20.
