STATESBORO, GA. – The Wofford volleyball team lost 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-11, 25-15) at Georgia Southern Saturday night in a Southern Conference match.
Wofford (15-13, 5-10) took the early lead in the opening set, 11-9, and held the two point advantage until a kill by Liguori gave the Terriers a 15-12 lead. Georgia Southern rallied to tie the set at 17 on a kill by Kym Coley. With the score tied at 20, the Eagles picked up two kills from Moriah Bellissimo to take a 22-20 lead. Wofford pulled within one point, 23-22, off a Wendy Burnett kill, but Georgia Southern took the first set, 25-22, on kill from Jamie DeRatt and solo block from Coley.
Wofford again took the lead in the second set, 8-6, and pushed the lead out to 11-7 on an Eagle attack error. Trailing 13-9, Georgia Southern went on a 4-0 run to tie the set at 13. Neither team could pull ahead until Wofford broke a tie at 18 with a kill by Burnett, a solo block by Rachel Woodlee and a block by Burnett and Bekah Dorsey to take a 21-18 lead. However, the Eagles again forced a tie this time at 22 on back-to-back Bellissimo kills, but Woffrord took three of the final for points on two Arden Anderson kills to win the set 25-23.
In the third set, Georgia Southern broke a tie at six with an 8-1 run to take a 14-7 lead. Wofford was able to cut the lead to five points, 16-9, but the Eagle pulled away to take the set 25-11.
The Eagles took control of the fourth set early with an 8-3 lead, but Wofford pulled within three points, 8-5. However, Georgia Southern answered with a 4-0 run to take control of the set 12-5. Wofford cut the lead to five points, 15-10, but the Eagles ended the set on a 10-5 run to ear the set four win 25-15 and the match win.
Burnett paced the Terriers with ten kills and a .321 hitting percentage. She also tied for the team lead with three block assists with Anderson and Liz Buterbaugh. Reagan Styles collected 17 digs, while Dorsey handed out 27 assists.
Bellissimo and Meredith Paskert tied for the Georgia Southern team lead with 15 kills each. Bellissimo also picked up ten digs to earn a double-double. Alexandra Beecher had a game-high 28 digs, and Kate Van Dyke passed out 44 assists.
Wofford returns to action Sunday at Davidson at 2 p.m. With a win over the Wildcats the Terriers will advance to the Southern Conference Tournament.
