DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Wofford volleyball team’s rally in third set came up short as the Terriers lost their season finale 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-22) at Davidson in a Southern Conference match in Belk Arena.
Wofford ends its season at 15-14 overall and 5-11 in the Southern Conference. The Terriers earn their second winning season in four seasons.
With the score tied at seven in the first set, Wofford pushed ahead by two points, 9-7, with a kill by Woodlee and Arden Anderson. Wofford took the lead out to three points, 11-8, off an Amanda Liguori kill and again at, 12-9, on a block by Liguori and Anderson. The Wildcats put together a 2-0 run to pull within one point, 13-12, on a Brown kill and Wofford attack error, but Liguori kept the lead at two points, 14-12, with a kill. Trailing 15-13, Davidson tied the set at 15 on a kill by Sewell and a Terrier attack error. Down 17-16, Davidson flipped the lead with Brown kill and a kill from Shannon McPherson, but Wofford answered with an Anderson kill and a Davidson blocking error to regain the lead, 19-18. After trading points, Davidson broke a tie at 21 as they took advantage of a Wofford lift call and a solo block by Caroline Brown to take a 23-21 lead and force a Terrier timeout. Davidson pushed the lead to 24-21 on a kill by Sewell, but Wofford fought off two set points on back-to-back Woodlee kills to pull within one point, 24-23, and force a Wildcat timeout. Davidson took the set, 25-23, after the timeout with a kill from Sewell.
Davidson pulled out to a 4-1 lead to start the second set, but Wofford responded and cut the lead to 5-4 with a 3-1 run aided by two Taylor Baird kills. Davidson answered as the Wildcats pushed the lead back to three points, 9--6, sparked by a block by Sewell and Ley,. Wofford responded as they pulled even at nine on solo block by Woodlee. The Wildcats took advantage of a service error and attack error to regain the lead, 11-9. Davidson’s lead hit three points, 13-10 on a kill by Brown, but Wofford cut the lead back down to one point 13-12, on Wildcat error. The lead hit five, 19-14, on a Terrier set error, attack error and ace by Sewell. Down 20-15, Wofford pulled within three points, 20-17, but Davidson answered with two consecutive points to regain a five-point lead, 22-17. Down 24-18, Wofford reeled off three straight points on kills by Liguori and Woodlee and an ace by Bekah Dorsey to trim the lead to 24-21. Following a Davidson timeout, the Wildcats took a 2-0 advantage in the match as they closed the set 25-21 on kill by Sewell.
Davidson opened the third set with a 6-1 run as highlighted by three kills from Taylor Pisel. Wofford answered as the Terriers used a service error by Davidson to spark a 4-0 run and cut the lead to 6-5. Burnett had a key solo block during the run. The Wildcats pushed the lead out to 14-5 with an 8-0 run started by a kill from Brown. Wofford ended the run with a Liguori kill and ace to pull the to set to 14-7, but Davidson extended the lead back to eight points, 15-7, on Terrier attack error. Wofford managed to rally back and tie the set at 17 with an 8-2 run. Anderson had two kills and a block and Woodlee had two kills and an ace during the run. Davidson ended the run with a kill from Shannon McPherson that sparked a 4-0 Wildcat run as they regained a 21-17 lead. The Terriers again mounted a charge at the set as they used two Davidson errors to pull within two points, 21-19. Down 20-22 a Liguori kill and Wildcat attack error tied the set at 22. However, Davidson ended the set with the final three points to claim the set 25-22 and the match 3-0.
Davidson outhit Wofford, 216 to .135 in the set and held a 7-to-4 blocking advantage.
Amanda Liguori led Wofford with 12 kills, while Rachel Woodlee had ten kills. Bekah Dorsey handed out 33 assists and 15 digs for a double-double. Jessica Graham collected 14 digs while Reagan Styles picked up 12 digs. Styles ends her career as the Terriers all-time lead in digs with 1,631. She will also go down having played in 466 sets, also a new school record, and 128 matches, tying a school record. Woodlee wraps up her career with 1,084.5 points putting her third all-time. Anderson finishes her Terrier career as the program’s all-time block assists record, 346, and hitting percentage record at .289.
