CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The Wofford women’s basketball team dropped its Southern Conference opener, 68-54, at Chattanooga as the Lady Mocs picked up 29 points from Ashlen Dewart in the McKenzie Arena Thursday night.
Dewart added 12 rebounds to go along with her 29 points becoming the second player to score 29 points against Wofford this season. She was 12-of-22 from the floor and 5-of-10 from the free throw line. Kayla Christopher followed with 16 points, while Taylor hall handed out a team-high five assists.
Brittenham paced the Terriers with 17 points of off 7-of-11 shooting from the floor and 3-of-7 from three. She handed out six assists pushing her over the 400 career assists mark. She becomes only the second Terrier to eclipses 400 career assists. Daniella Motley followed with 12 points, while Khadijah Joyner grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and had a game-high four blocks.
Chattanooga got off to an 11-3 run three minutes into play highlighted by six points from Dewart in the post. Wofford mounted a 6-0 run as they cut the lead to 11-9 on a Brittenham baseline floater at the 15-minute mark, but Dewart scored on two more post moves to push the lead back out to six points, 15-9, a minute later.
The Terriers cut the lead to 15-14 with a 5-0 run with a basket in the paint from Michelle Merritt and a three from the top of the key from Brittenham with 12 minutes to play in the half. Dewart made the Lady Mocs’ first basket in four minutes to spark an 11-2 run Chattanooga run to take the lead out to 26-16 with seven minutes showing on the clock.
Chanel Stokes ended the run with a three and Brittenham drained her third three of the half as the Terriers went on a 10-0 run to tie the game at 26 with 4:43 before the half.
After trading baskets, Chattanooga closed out the half on an 8-2 run sparked by seven points from Christopher as the Lady Mocs took a 36-30 lead into the break.
Brittenham accounted for half, 15, of the Terries 30 points at the break, while Dewart scored 17 of the Lady Mocs 36 points. Both teams high shooting percentages after 20 minutes of play, with Wofford converting 46 percent of its field goals, and Chattanooga make 44 percent of its shots from the floor.
Chattanooga came out and extended the lead to 11 points, 43-32, with four points from Dewart and a three from Christopher following a Lady Moc offensive rebound three and a half minutes into play in the second half.
Wofford answered back as they cut the lead to seven points, 43-26, following two Chanel Stokes free throws with 14 minutes to play.
The two teams scored six points each over the next six minutes as the Lady Mocs kept the lead at seven points, 49-42, with eight minutes remaining. Each team had three different players score during the six minutes.
The Lady Mocs took the lead out to 11 points, 53-42, a minute later, but Jordan Frazier hit a corner three to cut the lead back to single digits, 53-45, on the next Terrier possession.
Frazier’s three sparked an 8-0 Terrier run as she made another three from the corner to cut the lead down to three points, 53-50, with 5:45 left in the game.
Christopher answered for Chattanooga with four points as the Lady Mocs went on a 6-0 to increase the lead back to 11 points, 61-50, two minutes later.
The Lady Mocs held the Terriers off over the final two minutes as they picked up the 68-54 win.
Wofford was whistled for 20 fouls resulting in 27 Chattanooga free throws including 11 fouls and 16 free throws in the second half. The Lady Mocs committed only eight fouls, four in each half, leading to only four free throws for the Terriers, two in each half. Chattanooga scored 14 points from the line, while Wofford made all four of its free throw attempts.
Chattanooga outrebounded Wofford 50-39 including 21 offensive rebounds leading to 20 second chance points for the Lady Mocs. The Terriers scored only six second chance points off of eight offensive rebounds.
Wofford stays on the road with a trip to Samford on December 1 at 3 p.m. The Terriers finish the current four-game road swing at Alabama on December 17 at noon.
