BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – Daniella Motley turned in her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds, but Wofford’s late game charge came up short as Samford escaped with a 52-46 win.
Motley’s double-double on the day was the second double-double by a Terrier in the first six games of the season. Wrightson led Wofford with 13 points. She was 8-for-8 from the free throw line tying the Wofford school record for free throw percentage in a game. It is the second time this season Wrightson has tied he record with a perfect free throw percentage.
The Bulldogs (4-2) opened the game with an 11-2 run over the first three minutes and 45 seconds of play on a Shelby Campbell game. Wofford (4-3) fought back and tied the scored at 14 as four different Terriers scored over the next seven minutes highlighted by four points from Mariah Masalin.
Samford answered with an 8-2 run as they took a 22-16 with basket by Taylor Reece with 5:37 left in the first half. The Bulldogs pushed the lead out to 11 points 33-22 on a Reece layup heading into the half.
Wofford cut the lead down to seven points, 33-26, on a Motley basket two minutes into play, but Samford responded and took the lead out to 13 points, 42-29, on a Campbell three with 10:31 showing on the clock.
The Terriers never let the Bulldogs pull away and eventually cut the lead down to four points, 45-41, on as Logan Morris knocked down a jumper with 2:47 left in play. Samford got a layup from Hannah Dawson and a three from Lydia McGee as they increased the lead to 50-41 with 54 seconds left.
Wofford again cut the lead to four points, 50-46, with 24 seconds on the clock, but McGee converted two free throws to seal the win for Samford.
Wofford finished the game 35 percent from the floor and 68 percent from the free throw line. The Terriers made only one of their 15 attempts from three. Samford ended the game at 36 percent overall and 50 percent from the free throw line. The Bulldogs made seven of its 19 attempts from long range.
.Samford had 14 assists as a team on 19 made baskets, while Wofford had three assists on 16 made baskets.
Reece led all scorers with 17 points on 7-of12 shooting from the floor. She also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Campbell and McGee chipped in 12 points and 11 points each. Campbell also handed out five assists in the game.
The Terriers finish the current four-game road swing at Alabama on December 17 at noon before returning to the Benjamin Johnson area for its final game before Christmas Break against Gardner0Webb at 3 p.m. on December 19.
