GREENSBORO, N.C. – On Tuesday night at the Greensboro Coliseum, the Wofford men’s basketball team won 68-56 over UNCG. The Wofford defense was a key factor in the contest, holding UNCG to only 38.9% from the floor. Brad Loesing reached 1,000 career points as he scored 19 points.
Wofford is 18-12 overall and 11-6 in the SoCon. UNCG is 12-17 overall with a 10-7 mark in conference play and the loss denied them a chance to lock up first place in the North Division. The Terriers had four players score in double figures, led by Loesing with 19 and Drew Crowell with 12. Karl Cochran and Kevin Giltner each had ten points, while Lee Skinner led all players with eight rebounds. The Spartans were led by Derrell Armstrong with 19 points.
“We managed over the last few minutes to get the win,” said head coach Mike Young. “Our energy and awareness was good tonight. I thought our team exuded toughness tonight. Brad Loesing reaching 1,000 points is an incredible accomplishment. He is the ultimate Terrier academically, on the floor, and what he has done for our College on campus. Hats off to Loesing.”
The Terriers scored first and had an early 5-2 lead after a three by Karl Cochran. The Spartans had a one point advantage, but Wofford had four straight points for a 9-6 lead at 16:30 on the clock in the first half. A three by Brad Loesing gave the Terriers a 12-8 advantage a minute later. UNCG scored the next seven points to regain the lead at 15-12 with twelve minutes left in the half.
The Spartans continued the 10-0 run and took an 18-12 lead after a three. Drew Crowell ended the run with a jumper at the eleven minute mark. Wofford tied the game at 20 with 9:10 on the clock on a lay-up by Lee Skinner. The game was tied at 22, 26, and 28, then Wofford took a 30-28 lead on a shot by Brad Loesing with 42 seconds left in the half. UNCG did not score in the final 4:27 as Wofford had a 30-28 advantage at the break.
UNCG tied the game at 30 on the first possession of the second half. The teams traded baskets until Wofford took a 38-34 lead after a jumper by Lee Skinner in the lane after four minutes of play. After Wofford had a six point advantage at 40-34, the Spartans ended a four minute scoring drought. Kevin Giltner answered with a three for a 43-36 lead with 12:45 on the clock.
Wofford pushed the lead to 47-38 after two free throws by Lee Skinner at the 10:42 mark in the second half. The Spartans pulled to 47-42 two minutes later. Neither team was able to score for over two minutes until Drew Crowell hit back-to-back shots for a 51-42 lead with just under five minutes to play. Brad Loesing hit a jumper for a 55-46 lead at 3:41 and the lead remained at nine after a lay-up by Drew Crowell. A three by Kevin Giltner pushed the lead to 60-50 and Brad Loesing added two free throws for a twelve point lead with under two minutes remaining. Over the final minutes, the Terriers hit their free throws and came away with a 68-56 victory.
Brad Loesing scored his 1,000 career point on a free throw in the first half. He is the 42nd player in school history to reach the 1,000 mark and now has 1,015 points. Trevis Simpson, the SoCon’s leading scorer, did not play for the Spartans. Wofford has won nine straight over the Spartans. David Williams fouled out for UNCG.
Wofford shot 51.1% from the floor while UNCG shot 38.9% overall. The Terriers were 4-of-11 from three, while the Spartans were 5-of-19 from behind the arc. Wofford was 18-of-21 from the free throw line, while UNCG was 9-of-10 from the line. The Terriers had a 31 to 24 lead on the glass.
The final regular season contest will be on Saturday, February 25 at 7:00 p.m. against Furman at Benjamin Johnson Arena. Prior to the game, the Terriers will honor the six graduating players on the team.
