ELON, N.C. – Despite cutting the lead to single digits in the second half, Wofford could not complete the comeback on the road at Elon in Alumni Gym as the Terriers fell 72-59 Saturday afternoon in a Southern Conference game.
Elon took an early 8-6 lead from back-to-back threes from Kelsey Evans four minutes into the game, and the Phoenix held the two-point lad, 12-10, following a Mariah Masalin free throw with 12:36 left in the half.
Wofford took a 13-12 lead with just 11 minutes left on a deep three from Morgan Wrightson, but Elon answered with a 14-1 run sparked by baskets from Evans and Aiesha Harper and a three Ali Ford to take a 26-14 lead with seven minutes left in the half.
Logan Morris knocked down a baseline jumper to end a four-minute run for the Terriers without a field goal as they cut the lead to 26-16 with 6:33 left.
Wofford used the Morris basket to go on 6-2 run and trim the Phoenix lead 28-22 following a Wrightson three throw at the four-minute mark.
Elon answered with a 5-2 run to push the back to double-digits, 35-24, on a three from Ford with 1:33 on the clock which proved to be the final basket of the half.
The two teams came out of the half and traded baskets including threes from Wofford’s Wrightson and Elon’s Evans as the Phoenix held the 11 point lead, 40-29, with 16:32 left.
Wofford was able to cut the lead to eight points, 48-40, following a Masalin basket, but Elon answered with a 7-0 run to push the lead to 55-40 on a three from Ford with 10:36 remaining. Rachel Brittenham ended the run with a three to pull the Terriers back to within 12 points, 55-43, 30 seconds later.
The Brittenham basket sent the Terriers on a 5-2 run to pull within nine points, 57-48, on a Moorhouse free throw with seven minutes left, but Elon responded with a 6-1 run to take a 63-49 lead three and a half minutes later.
Wofford didn’t back away as they knocked down two threes from Brittenham and Morris to pull within nine points, 63-55, with 3:41 remaining.
Following an Elon basket and two free throws from Morris with 1:20, Sam Coffer, Evans, Ford and Harper all converted free throws to seal the Phoenix win 72-59 win.
The Terriers shot 38 percent from the floor, 44 percent from three and only 55 percent from the line, 12-of-22, while the Phoenix went 39 percent overall, 42 percent from long range and 70 percent from the charity stripe, 14-of-20.
Elon scored 26 points off of 18 Wofford turnovers, while the Terriers only managed eight points of eight Phoenix turnovers.
Wofford was led in scoring by Wrightson with 17 points, while Brittenham and Motley each scored 12 points. Motley earned her team-leading seventh double-double as she collected 14 rebounds. Moltey also tied a career-high with four blocked shots. Brittenham handed out six assists to bring her to 362 career assists, six shy of third on the career list. She now has 147 assists this season, one shy of second place for assists in a single-season.
Evans paced Elon with 24 points by going 9-of-13 from the floor. Harris followed with 16 points, and Ford and Harper chipped in 12 and ten points respectively. Coffer led the Phoenix on the glass with 11 rebounds.
Wofford will end its season at UNCG on Monday, February 27 at 7 p.m. before heading to Asheville for the Southern Conference Tournament.
