SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Despite Wofford’s Daniella Motley’s team-leading sixth double-double, Chattanooga escaped the Benjamin Johnson Arena with a 51-39 win over the Terriers Saturday afternoon.
The two teams traded the lead over the opening seven minutes of play, before Chattanooga broke a tie at seven with an 11-2 run to pull ahead 20-9 with 7:27 to play in the half.
Wofford was able to cut the lead to seven points, 20-13, on an Erin Frost layup a minute later, but the Lady Mocs closed out the half on 10-4 run to take a 30-17 halftime lead. Wofford’s only points over the final 6:37 came on jumpers from Mariah Masalin and Motley.
Chattanooga held their 13 point lead, 23-36, for the first five minutes of the second half, before Wofford mounted an 8-0 and cut the lead to 36-31 with ten minutes to play on a Lauren Kirby jumper. Motley and Kirby had four each during the run for the Terriers.
Wofford wouldn’t come any closer to the lead, as the Lady Mocs went on an 11-2 run to take a 14 point lead, 47-33, with just over five minutes to remaining. Kayla Christopher sparked the Chattanooga run with five points as Chattanooga regained control of the game.
The Lady Mocs kept the double-digit lead as the earned the 51-39 win over the Terriers.
Wofford, who entered the game third in the Southern Conference in field goal percentage, finished the game at 26 percent from the floor and 79 percent from the free throw line, 11-of-14. The Terriers went 0-for-10 from three snapping a 211-game streak without a three point basket dating all the way back to the 2004-05 season when the Terriers went 0-for-13 from against Appalachian State.
Chattanooga finished the game 35 percent from the floor, 15 percent from long range and 65 percent from the charity stripe, 11-of-17.
Chattanooga held a slight rebound advantage 42-39, but scored 34 points in the paint compared to only eight for Wofford.
Wofford has now held nine of its 12 home opponents under their season average; Chattanooga entered the game averaging 64 points per game.
Motley paced the Terriers with 14 points and ten rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season and eighth of her career. Motley also added five steals and three blocks. April Moorhouse was the only other Wofford player in double-digits with ten points.
Whitney Hood was the lone Lady Moc in double-figures with ten points and seven rebounds. Kylie Lambert grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
With the loss, the Terriers slip to 10-12 overall and 3-10 in the SoCon, the Lady Mocs improve to 16-6 overall and 11-2 in SoCon play.
Wofford stays home to complete the home stand with Samford on February 6 at 6 p.m. on ESPN3, as the SoCon game of the Week.
