DAVIDSON, N.C. – On Monday night the Wofford men’s basketball team was defeated 76-54 by Davidson at Belk Arena. The Wildcats had a 21-2 run in the first half that the Terriers could not overcome, despite 16 points in the second half by Brad Loesing.
Wofford is 15-10 overall and 8-5 in the SoCon. Davidson is 18-5 overall with a 12-1 mark in conference play to lead the South Division. The Terriers were led by Brad Loesing with 18 points and Karl Cochran with 17 points. Four Wofford players had five rebounds each. The Wildcats were led by J.P. Kuhlman with 14 points as four players scored in double figures.
“We had some good cracks at it in the first half,” said head coach Mike Young. “We had some shots that we typically get in the bottom of the basket. We had a couple in the paint with Drew and Aerris and we struggled some with execution. I certainly credit Davidson with some of that. They defended us well. It was a bad night and Davidson had something to do with that, but tomorrow is a new day and we have Georgia Southern on Thursday.”
The Terriers scored first with a bucket by Aerris Smith, but the Wildcats took an early 5-2 lead. Karl Cochran hit a three to tie the game at five with 15:40 on the clock. Wofford gained a 9-7 advantage after a bucket by Drew Crowell, however the Wildcats answered with a 6-0 run to take a 13-9 lead after eight minutes of play. Wofford ended the run with a bucket by Karl Cochran, but Davidson made it an 18-11 advantage after a three with 7:35 left in the first half.
Davidson continued a 16-2 run to take a 24-11 lead with 4:56 on the clock. Another couple buckets and a free throw pushed the lead to 28-11 before Wofford finally got a bucket after a seven minute scoring drought to make it 28-13 with three minutes left in the half. At the break, the score was 32-15 as the Terriers shot only 26.9% from the floor.
To open the second half, Brad Loesing scored five points on a jumper and a three to cut the lead to 32-20 just 1:08 into play. Back-to-back threes by the Wildcats pushed the Davidson advantage to 40-22 before a lay-up by Karl Cochran. The Wildcats took a 51-30 lead at 12:34 in the second half. The Davidson run went to 8-0 as they pushed the score to 57-30 at the midpoint of the half.
The Terriers chipped away and cut the lead to 59-39 with 8:30 remaining in the game. The Wildcats led 61-43 after a jumper by Brad Loesing with six minutes on the clock. Back-to-back threes by Karl Cochran and Lee Skinner cut the lead to 65-49, but the Wildcats answered with a three for a 68-49 advantage with four minutes left in the game. Davidson added a couple more threes for a 74-54 lead with a minute to go and hit the final shot of the game for a 76-54 win.
Wofford shot 40.0% from the floor while Davidson shot 45.2% overall. The Terriers were 6-of-17 from three, while the Wildcats were 7-of-14 from behind the arc. Wofford missed the lone attempt from the line and Davidson was 13-of-16 from the line. The Wildcats had a 40-33 lead in rebounds while Wofford turned the ball over eleven times.
The Terriers continue the three-game road trip on Thursday night at Georgia Southern and Saturday afternoon at Appalachian State. The next home game will be Wednesday, February 15 against Elon at 7:00 p.m.
