SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Daniella Motley and Morgan Wrightson scored 22 points and 20 points respectively as Wofford handed Samford a 73-59 loss Monday night in the Benjamin Johnson Arena in a Southern Conference game.
The Terriers had two 20-point scorers for the first time since January 12, 2002 when Jenny Nett and Natalie Walsh scored 33 points and 29 points respectively against Davidson.
Motley’s 22 points were a career-high for the junior, while Wrightson’s 20 points was the third time this season the junior has turned a 20-point performance. Motley’s 10-of-15 performance was also the first time since Nakia Mister made ten baskets on November 23, 2005. Logan Morris followed with 12 points making it the 15th game this season Wofford has had three or more scorers in double-digits.
April Moorhouse put the Terriers on the board first three seconds into the game with a layup, but neither team could pull away until Morgan Wrightson knocked down a three to spark a 10-0 Wofford run to take a 21-11 lead with 12:09 to play in the half. Wrightson had eight points during the run including the three and a three-point play.
Jazmine Powers ended the run with a layup and Ruth Ketcham knocked down a jumper with just over ten minutes to play to pull Bulldogs within six points, 21-15. Daniella Motley ended the run with a baseline reverse layup to give Wofford a 23-15 lead.
Wofford held the eight-point advantage until Hannah Dawson knocked down a three from the top of the key to spark a 6-2 Bulldog run that cut the lead to 29-25, but Motley answered with a three-point to push the lead back to seven points, 32-25, with 5:50 to play.
Wofford pushed the lead to double-digits, 37-27, following a Wrightson three and a Logan Morris layup a minute and a half later. Wofford pushed the lead to 42-27 with five straight points from Morris including a three.
Powers picked off a Terrier pass and converted a fast-break layup to give the game the halftime score of 42-29.
Wofford came out of the half with 4-0 run highlighted by a Rachel Brittenham three to push the lead to 46-29, but Dawson ended the run with a basket, which started an 11-2 Bulldog run to cut the lead to 48-40 at the 13-minute mark.
Wrightson knocked down a floater in the lane that sparked a 10-2 run for the Terriers that pushed the lead back to 16 points, 58-42, with just over eights minutes left in the half.
The two teams traded baskets until Paige Anderson knocked down a long three and cut the lead to 60-51, at the seven-minute mark, but Mariah Masalin answered for the Terriers with layup on the next Terrier possession.
Samford went on a 5-2 run to pull within 64-56 with 4:42 on the clock, but Motley scored on her own putback a minute and a half later to push the lead back to ten points, 66-56.
The Bulldogs answered on the next possession with a three-point play from Shelby Campbell to trim the lead to 66-59.
Motley knocked down and jumper and Morris converted a layup as the Terriers pushed ahead 70-59 with a minute and half remaining.
Wrightson knocked down three free throws as the Terriers held on for the 73-59 win over the Bulldogs.
Wofford finished the game 54 percent from the floor, 33 percent from three and 63 percent from the free throw line, while Samford finished 45 percent overall, 30 percent from long range and made all six of their free throw attempts.
Wofford outrebounded Samford 34-21.
The Bulldogs were led by Anderson with 15 points, and Ketcham and Dawson followed with 12 points and ten points respectively.
Wofford travels to Appalachian State on February 8 at 6 p.m. before returning home against Western Carolina on February 11 at 2 p.m.
