Box Score BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State placed four players in double figures en route to a 75-46 win over Wofford Wednesday night in the Holmes Center in a Southern Conference game.
Wofford got out to a 7-3 lead highlighted by Morgan Wrightson three, but the Mountaineers tied the game at seven on a Kelsey Sharkey layup with 15:48 left in the first half.
The Terriers went on their own 4-0 run with a layup from Mariah Masalin and a jumper from Daniella Motley, before Sharkey scored on a layup to give the game an 11-9 score with 12:29 on the clock.
With the score tied at 13, App State used two Terrier turnovers to go on a 4-0 run and take a 17-13 lead, but Wrightson ended the run with a three that circled the rim to cut the lead to 17-16 at the nine minute mark.
The Mountaineers pulled ahead with a 9-2 run to take a 26-18 lead with just over six minutes to play. April Moorhouse ended the run and cut the lead to 26-21 with a three-point play on offensive rebound and put-back a minute later.
App State pulled away with an 11-4 run over the final five minutes to take a 37-25 lead over the Terriers into the half. App State’s Anna Freeman made a three for the final basket of the half to give the Mountaineers the 12-point lead, the largest lead of the half.
The Mountaineers came out of the half with a 12-0 run to quickly push the lead to 26-points, 51-25, just over six minutes into play in the half. Michele Merritt made Wofford’s first basket of the half with 13:55 into the half.
App State pushed the lead to 57-29, but Morris knocked down a three with 10:21 on the clock to cut the lead to 57-32.
App State’s lead 29 points, 63-34, at the seven-minute mark, and increased to 31 points, 65-34, with 6:15 left in the game.
App State held the lead as they took the game 75-46.
Wofford finished the game 35 percent from the floor, 30 percent from three and 56 percent from the free throw line. App State ended the game 51 percent overall, 25 percent from long range and 64 percent from the line.
The Mountaineers held a 43-29 rebound advantage and scored 15 second chance points compared to six for the Terriers. App State forced 30 Wofford turnovers and scored 28 points off turnovers. Wofford forced 25 turnovers and scored 16 points off those turnovers.
Wofford did not have player in double-digits for the first time this season. Masalin and Motley led the Terriers with eight points. Moorhouse followed with seven points. She now has 840 points putting her in a tie for 17th all-time.
App State placed four players in double figures with Anna Freeman leading the way with 16 points. Sharkey followed with 12 points, while Courtney Freeman and Chakeith Weldon had 11 and ten points respectively.
With the loss, Wofford falls to 11-13 overall and 4-10 in SoCon play, while App State stays atop the conference standings with a 19-3 overall record and 13-1 SoCon record.
Wofford returns home against Western Carolina on February 11 at 2 p.m. for its next game.
