SPARTANBURG, S.C. – East Tennessee State scored three runs in the first two innings to get past Wofford, 5-3, Wednesday evening at Russell C. King Field.
The Buccaneers (9-6) plated two runs in the top of the first with two outs after a blast over the left field wall by Dylan Pratt. Wofford (8-9) responded in the bottom half of the inning, as a sacrifice fly to deep left field scored James Foster from third base, cutting ETSU’s lead to 2-1.
ETSU tacked on another run in the top of the second when Chris Riopedre scored from third following a throwing error by David Roney in an attempt to catch Cory Betterson stealing second base. The Buccaneers padded their lead, adding runs in the top of the fifth and ninth innings to take a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Wofford attempted a comeback, cutting the lead to 5-3 as David Roney hit a solo home run over the right field wall to lead off the frame. The following batter, Taylor Rozier, reached base, but the Terriers were unable to complete the rally.
Logan Rice (1-0) earned the win for ETSU, throwing 2.0 innings with no runs allowed, two hits, and one strikeout. Starter Will Carter pitched 3.0 innings, allowing two runs with two hits and three strikeouts. Kerry Doane picked up his third save of the year, hurling the last inning, allowing one run off of one hit and one strikeout.
Mason Bradley (0-1) took the loss for the Terriers, throwing 5.0 innings with three earned runs, six hits and seven strikeouts.
David Roney paced the Terriers offensively, going 3-for-4 with a solo home run. Also picking up multiple hits were James Foster (2 –for-4) and Josh Hyman (2-for-4, 1 RBI). Kerry Doane (2-for-4), Mason Hershey (2-for-4) and Matthew Scruggs (2-for-5) each led ESTU.
The Terriers return to SoCon play this weekend, traveling to College of Charleston for a three-game series. The first game of the series is slated for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch on Friday evening.
