Baseball Defeated 8-1 At College of Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 8-1 by the College of Charleston at Patriots Point. The Cougars hit two-run homers in the third and fifth innings to build the lead and limited the Terriers to only six hits in the contest.

Wofford is 8-11 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The College of Charleston is 14-5 overall with a 6-2 mark in the SoCon. The Terriers were led by Eric Brenk with two hits and David Roney with an RBI single. The Cougars were led by Bradley Goodson with two hits and two RBIs, while Marty Gantt added three RBIs.

After opening with two scoreless innings, the Cougars got on the board when Gunnar Heidt walked and then Bradley Goodson hit a home run to left center for a 2-0 lead in the third inning. The Terries had Josh Hyman reach on an error in the top of the fourth, but he was left on base.

The College of Charleston added another run in the bottom of the fourth when Rob Harding walked and stole second. A single by Ryan Welke with two outs scored Harding for a 3-0 lead and Gunnar Heidt added an RBI double to make it a 4-0 game.

In the top of the fifth, Eric Brenk led off with a double, but he was caught stealing third. The Cougars opened the bottom half of the fifth with a double by Brandon Murray. A home run over the left field wall by Marty Gantt increased the lead to 6-0.

Wofford opened the top of the seventh with a triple by Josh Hyman and Mac Doyle walked. With two out, a single by David Roney to right center made it a 6-1 game. In the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars had a walk and single to lead off. A sacrifice fly by Marty Gantt drove in one run for a 7-1 lead and a Wofford error scored an unearned run for an 8-1 advantage at the end of seven innings.

Neither team was able to score in the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth, Mac Doyle singled to lead off for the Terriers but he was left on second to end the game.

Wofford starter Cash Collins (1-3) went six innings and allowed eight runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. Pete Noordsy threw two innings and gave up only one hit with three strikeouts.

College of Charleston starter Matt Pegler (4-0) threw seven innings and gave up four hits and one run with seven strikeouts. Dre Watts went an inning and allowed one hit. Derrick Smith worked the ninth and gave up one hit.

The three-game series with the College of Charleston concludes on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. On Wednesday night, the Terriers will play two-time defending National Champion South Carolina in Columbia. The contest will air on Fox Sports South.
