CHARLESTON, S.C. – In a contest that featured a rain delay of almost five hours, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 8-4 by the College of Charleston at Patriots Point on Sunday. The Terriers had a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth, but the Cougars answered with four runs on two homers in the bottom of the sixth on the way to the series sweep.

Wofford is 8-12 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The College of Charleston is 15-5 overall with a 7-2 mark in the SoCon. The Terriers had seven hits by seven different players, while four players had RBIs. Alex Wilson struck out a career-high six batters. The Cougars had the first hit of the game, a double in the bottom of the second inning by Rob Harding. Two walks loaded the bases with one out. A single through the left side by Gunnar Heidt scored two runs for a 2-0 lead after two innings.

Wofford got one run back in the top of the third when David Roney led off with a solo home run to right field. Matt Moore walked and then James Foster singled. A bunt by Eric Brenk scored Moore from third to tie the game at two. A single by Mac Doyle drove in Foster from second base to take a 3-2 lead with one out, but a double play ended the Wofford half of the third.

With the first batter of the bottom of the third inning at the plate, lightning in the area cleared the field. After a delay of four hours and 42 minutes for rain, the game resumed. Back-to-back doubles by Marty Gantt and Daniel Aldrich drove in a run for the Cougars to tie the game at three at the end of the third inning.

In the top of the sixth, Mac Doyle walked and Konstantine Diamaduros singled. After a sacrifice bunt moved them into scoring position, a fielder’s choice erased Mac Doyle but a walk loaded the bases with two out. Matthew Kaskow was hit by a pitch which scored a run and gave the Terriers a 4-3 lead, but the bases were left loaded.

The Cougars had two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth when Brandon Glazer pinch hit and cleared the left center fence to make it a 6-4 game in favor of the College of Charleston. Marty Gantt then added a solo home run to make it 7-4 at the end of six innings.

After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the order, the Cougars had runners at first and third with one out but both were left on base. In the top of the eighth, Josh Hyman reached on an error and James Plaisted singled but a fielder’s choice ended the scoring chance. In the bottom of the eighth, Tyler Jackson added a solo home run for the Cougars to take an 8-4 lead. Wofford was retired in order in the top of the ninth to end the game.
