Terriers Rally to Advance with 64-53 Win over College of Charleston

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Behind a strong second half shooting performance, Wofford advances to the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Tournament with a 64-53 upset win over No. 9 seed College of Charleston Friday in Kimmel Arena.
 
Wofford shot 52 percent in the second half after shooting only 20 percent in the first half as they scored 44 second half points.
 
The Cougars took an early lead as they sprinted out with a 6-0 run before Daniella Motley knocked down a free throw for the first Terrier points at the 16-minute mark.
 
Following a CofC basket that stopped a three minutes scoring drought for both teams, Erin Frost drained a corner three to pull Wofford within four points, 8-4, but the Cougars responded with a layup from Cathryn Hardy to make it 10-4 with 12:55 left.
 
Wofford answered with a 5-0 run to tie the game at ten following an April Moorhouse with just under ten minutes to play, but the College of Charleston answered with a 4-0 run to take 14-9 lead on a basket by Alexis Hicks.
 
The two teams traded baskets until rallied from down 17-12 to cut the lead to 17-16 on a Logan Morris jumper with 4:39 left in the half.  The Terriers took their first lead of the game on a jumper by Rachel Brittenham at with 1:40 showing on the clock.
 
CofC closed out the half with the final four points to take a 23-20 lead into the locker rooms.
 
The Cougars came out of the break with a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 29-22 following free throws from Latisha Harris and a free throw from Hicks a minute and half into play.  Following free throws, Harris was ejected from the game with 17:29 to play for flagrant foul on Moorhouse.
 
Wofford used the ejected and answered with an 11-2 run to take a 33-31 lead on a three from Logan Morris with 14:21 left.  Wofford would extend their lead to as lard as 11 points, 45-34, with 11:27 remaining on a Motley jumper.
 
After CofC cut the lead to nine points, 47-38, Wofford took control of the game and pushed the lead out to a game-high 14 points, 52-38 on a Brittenham three with just under eight minutes to play.
 
CofC briefly cut the lead to single digits, 52-44, on a Megan Fischer layup with six minutes showing on the clock, but Wofford ended the game with an 11 point win, 64-53.
 
Wofford ended the game 35 percent from the floor, 29 percent from three and 58 percent from the free throw line.  College of Charleston finished the game 36 percent overall, and 75 percent from the free throw line.  The Cougars did not make three as the Terriers held an opponent without a long-range bucket for the second time this season.
 
Wrightson finished the game with a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds.  Brittenham chipped in 13 points and a game-high seven assists.  Motley and Morris added ten and 11 points respectively in the win.
 
With her seven assists, Brittenham moves just three assists, 157, shy the school’s single-season assists mark that she set in 2010-11 of 160 assists.  She also moves into third all-time with 372 assists.
 
Alyssa Frye paced the Cougars with 14 points, while Jillian Brown and Hicks followed with 12 and ten points respectively.
 
Wofford is now 8-14 all-time in the Southern Conference Tournament and advances to the quarterfinals for the second straight season.
 
Wofford moves on to play top seeded Davidson Saturday at noon in the Justice Center.
