CHARLESTON, S.C. – On Saturday afternoon at Riley Park, the Wofford baseball team picked up an 8-2 victory over The Citadel in Southern Conference action. The Terriers broke open a 1-1 game in the final three innings, which included four runs scored in the top of the ninth.
Wofford is 11-16 overall and 1-7 in the Southern Conference. The Citadel is 10-16 overall and 2-6 in the conference. The Terriers were led by Eric Brenk with three hits and Mac Doyle with two RBIs as eight Wofford players had hits in the contest. The Bulldogs were led by Grant Richards with three hits and one run scored.
The Terriers had the first hit of the game, a single by Mac Doyle in the first inning. The Bulldogs left one runner in the bottom of the second. In the bottom of the third, the Bulldogs led off with a double by Grant Richards. A single to left field by Nick Orvin drove in the first run of the contest for a 1-0 lead.
The Citadel led off the bottom of the fourth with a double by Joe Jackson, but he was left on base. Wofford opened the fifth inning with a single by Eric Brenk. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and stole third. A sacrifice fly by Stephen Cantrell scored Brenk to tie the game at one.
In the top of the sixth, James Foster had a single but he was left on base. Wofford had two runners on base in the top of the seventh after a single by Eric Brenk and a walk issued to Stephen Cantrell. A single by Matt Moore scored Brenk for a 2-1 lead and then Stephen Cantrell stole home on a double steal for a 3-1 lead. The Bulldogs had two singles in the bottom of the seventh, but both runners were stranded.
Wofford added a run in the top of the eighth on a solo home run by Konstantine Diamaduros to right field. It was his fourth home run of the season and 15th of his career. After the Bulldogs were retired in order in the bottom of the eighth, Eric Brenk opened the top of the ninth with a single and David Roney followed with a single. With one out, the bases were loaded after an intentional walk to Matt Moore. An RBI single by Matthew Kaskow made it a 5-1 game and a bases loaded walk to James Foster increased the lead to 6-1 when the rain began to fall in Charleston. With the bases still loaded and two out, Mac Doyle had a single up the middle that scored two runs for an 8-1 advantage. The Bulldogs had two runners on base in the bottom of the ninth when a wild pitch scored one run before the final strikeout ended the game.
Wofford starter Jesse Morris (2-1) went 6.2 innings with only one run allowed on six hits along with seven strikeouts. Eric Eck threw 2.1 innings with one run scored along with three strikeouts for his sixth save of the season.
The Citadel starter James Reeves worked 5.2 innings with one run allowed on three hits with two strikeouts. T.J. Clarkson (1-2) allowed seven runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Kevin Connell worked the final two-thirds of an inning without allowing a hit.
Wofford will complete the three-game series at The Citadel on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Next week the Terriers will play Tuesday and Wednesday at Virginia Tech before hosting Western Carolina for one game Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday.
