SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Wednesday evening, the Wofford baseball team defeated USC Upstate 9-4 at Russell C. King Field. At the plate, Mac Doyle was five-of-five on the night with three singles, a triple, and a home run along with three RBIs.
Wofford is 14-19 overall and USC Upstate is 22-12 overall. In addition to the performance of Mac Doyle, the Terriers were led by Taylor Rozier and Josh Hyman with two hits each and Hyman added two RBIs. The Spartans were led by Tyler Cook with three hits and two RBIs. The teams combined to use eleven pitchers in the contest and a total of 18 runners were left on base.
The Spartans left one on base in the top of the first inning. Wofford led off the bottom of the first with a single by James Foster. A single by Mac Doyle, along with a throwing error, allowed Foster to score. With Doyle at third base, a ground out by Eric Brenk drove in a run to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead.
USC Upstate stranded two runners on base in the top of the second inning. Taylor Rozier and Josh Hyman opened the bottom of the second with singles and they advanced on a sacrifice bunt. A sacrifice fly by Matthew Kaskow scored Rozier for a 3-0 advantage. The Spartans added two singles in the top of the third, but both runners were left on base.
In the top of the fourth, the Spartans had a solo home run by Trey Richardson to make it a 3-1 contest. Wofford led off the bottom of the inning with a double by Taylor Rozier. Josh Hyman then hit his first career home run to over the left field fence to give the Terriers a 5-1 lead.
Mac Doyle added a home run for Wofford in the bottom of the fifth to push the lead to 6-1. It was his eighth homer this season and 42nd of his career. In the top of the sixth, the Spartans loaded the bases after two walks and a single. A ground out by Jordan Stampler drove in one run for a 6-2 score. Tyler Cook hit a single to center field that scored two runners to cut the lead to 6-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, Mac Doyle tripled to right center and scored on a single by David Roney to give Wofford a 7-4 advantage. Wofford loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth on two walks and a hit by pitch. Mac Doyle had a single up the middle to drive in two runs to push the lead to 9-4. The Spartans had two runners on base in the top of the ninth, but both were stranded when the game ended.
Wofford starter Pete Noordsy (2-1) went three innings and allowed three hits along with three strikeouts. Connell Anderson threw 1.1 innings with one run allowed on four hits. Ryan Traylor added two-thirds of an inning without allowing a hit. Mason Bradley gave up three runs on one hit in two-thirds of an inning along with a strikeout. Alex Wilson worked 1.1 innings and gave up one hit with two strikeouts. J.D. Osborne added an inning without a hit allowed and a strikeout. Eric Eck threw the ninth and allowed one hit along with a strikeout.
USC Upstate starter Ben Augenstein (1-1) threw three innings and gave up five runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Andrew Wyant went three innings with one run allowed on two hits with three strikeouts. Jordan Rusk threw an inning and allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Chris Knauff worked two-thirds of an inning and did not allow a hit but two runs scored. Jake Waller hit the one batter he faced. Brandon Lee worked a third of an inning with one hit allowed.
Mac Doyle had five hits in the game to bring his career total 244, which moves him to second in school history. James Foster added a hit to give him 240 for his career, third in school history. Both players trail Shane Kirkley, who had 260 hits from 2005-08.
Wofford will face Davidson in a three-game Southern Conference series beginning on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. and continue on Saturday and Sunday.
