DAVIDSON, N.C. – In the final game of a three-game series, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 5-4 by Davidson at Wilson Field on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Wildcats swept the series and won all three games by one run.
Wofford is 14-22 overall and 3-12 in the Southern Conference. Davidson is 14-19 overall and 6-12 in conference play. The Terriers had two hits from Josh Hyman along with an RBI. The Wildcats had six players with two hits each and five players had RBIs.
In the first two innings, Wofford left one on base and Davidson stranded three after three hits. The Terriers opened the third inning with a single by Stephen Cantrell. Matthew Pelt then hit a double to left center to score Cantrell for a 1-0 lead. A single by Josh Hyman scored Pelt to make it a 2-0 game.
Davidson had two runners on base in the bottom of the third, but both were stranded. Wofford left one on base in the top of the fourth and the Wildcats stranded one in the bottom of the fourth. After Wofford was retired in order in the top of the fifth, the Wildcats had two singles in the bottom half of the inning. A single by Andrew Barna scored one run and a double by James Cerbie added a run to tie the game at two. A single by Michael Zeblo drove in a run to give the Wildcats a 3-2 lead. David Daniels added an RBI single for a 4-2 advantage before the end of the fifth.
In the top of the seventh, David Roney led off with a double. A single up the middle by Taylor Rozier scored Roney to cut the lead to 4-3. Davidson loaded the bases with three straight singles in the bottom of the seventh. A walk made it a 5-3 game, but the Wildcats left three runners on base.
The Terriers led off the top of the eighth with James Foster reaching on an error. Josh Hyman singled and advanced to second on the throw. A ground out by Konstantine Diamaduros scored Foster for a 5-4 score. Davidson loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but all three runners were stranded.
In the top of the ninth, David Roney was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Nick Peterson pinch ran and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Two strikeouts ended the contest in favor of the Wildcats.
Wofford starter Cash Collins (3-5) worked five innings and gave up four runs on ten hits with seven strikeouts. Alex Wilson went an inning and had one strikeout while not allowing a hit. Eric Eck threw the final two innings and gave up one run on four hits with four strikeouts.
Davidson starter Moody went 3.1 innings and allowed two runs on four hits with one strikeout. Brian Russell (4-4) worked 2.2 innings and gave up one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Matt Saeta allowed one hit in one inning. Ryan Lowe gave up one unearned run and one hit. Michael Zeblo threw the ninth and recorded two strikeouts.
On Wednesday night, the Terriers will play at USC Upstate before hosting Elon for a three-game Southern Conference series beginning on Friday night at 6:00 p.m.
