Baseball Drops 13-4 Decision At Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – On Tuesday evening, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 13-4 by Virginia Tech at English Field. The Hokies scored five runs in the second inning which the Terriers could not overcome, largely due to twelve runners left on base.

Wofford is 11-18 overall and Virginia Tech is 19-12 overall. The Terriers were led by Mac Doyle with two hits and two RBIs, while James Foster added an RBI. The Hokies were led by Chad Pinder with three hits and three RBIs, along with Mark Zagunis with three hits. The Virginia Tech pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.

In the top of the first, Konstantine Diamaduros had a single and Mac Doyle was hit by pitch but both were left on base. The Hokies opened with two singles and a sacrifice fly by Johnny Morales drove in the first run of the day.

After Wofford left two runners on base in the top of the second inning, Virginia Tech added a run on a ground out by Carson Helms to take a 2-0 lead. A double by Chad Pinder scored two runs. Johnny Morales and Mark Zagunis added RBI singles to make it a 6-0 score at the end of the second inning.

The Terriers loaded the bases in the top of the third after singles from Mac Doyle and Eric Brenk and a walk to David Roney, but a double play ended the scoring chance. In the top of the fourth, Stephen Cantrell singled and Matt Moore walked and both played moved into scoring position on a wild pitch with one out. A walk to James Foster loaded the bases and with two outs Mac Doyle singled through the left side to score two runs for a 6-2 score.

In the bottom of the fourth, Tyler Horan hit a two-run home run off the scoreboard in right field for an 8-2 lead. Wofford opened the top of the sixth with a single by Matthew Kaskow, who advanced to third on an error. A single by James Foster added a run to make it an 8-3 contest.

Virginia Tech led off the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back doubles and a ground out by Johnny Morales drove in a run. A double with two outs by Andrew Rash added a run to make it a 10-3 game. After Wofford left two on base in the top of the seventh, the Hokies loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning. A sacrifice fly by Chad Pinder and an error allowed two runs to score. Another sacrifice fly by Tyler Horan made it a 13-3 game.

Neither team scored in the eighth inning. The Terriers added a single by Luke Feisal in the top of the ninth, and he moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an error for a 13-4 final score.

Wofford starter Mason Bradley (0-2) worked two innings and allowed six runs on seven hits. Gus White went a season-long three innings and gave up four runs on five hits. Ryan Traylor worked an inning with one run allowed on three hits. Dominick Del Monte went two-thirds of an inning and gave up two runs, only one of which was earned. Anthony Rowland worked the final 1.1 innings without allowing a hit and striking out one.

Virginia Tech starter Devin Burke threw four innings with two runs allowed on five hits along with six strikeouts. Eddie Campbell (4-0) worked four innings and gave up one run on two hits with seven strikeouts. Sean Keselica threw the ninth and allowed one unearned run on one hit.

The Terriers will face Virginia Tech again on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. On Friday, Wofford will begin a three game series against Western Carolina with one game Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday.
