Baseball Wins 7-4 At UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – On Friday night, the Wofford baseball team won 7-4 over UNC Greensboro at UNCG Stadium. A grand slam home run by Josh Hyman in the third inning along with a career-high ten strikeouts from Brandon Yarusi propelled the Terriers to the victory.

Wofford is 20-29 overall and 7-18 in the SoCon. UNCG is 22-24 overall and 7-18 in league play. The Terriers were led by Josh Hyman with two hits and four RBIs, while Konstantine Diamaduros, James Plaisted, and David Roney each had two hits. UNCG was led by Kris Richards with two hits and an RBI.

The Spartans had two singles in the bottom of the first inning. A two-out single by Lloyd Enzor scored the first run of the game, but two runners were stranded at the end of the inning. Wofford and UNCG each left one runner on base in the second inning.

In the top of the third inning, the Terriers had runners on the corners after walks to Eric Brenk and James Foster. A squeeze bunt by Matt Pelt scored Brenk to tie the game at one. With the bases loaded after another walk, Josh Hyman hit a home run over the left field fence for a 5-1 lead. The home run was the second of the season for Hyman and it was the first grand slam of the year for the Terriers.

UNCG got one run back in the bottom of the third inning on a solo home run by Trevor Edwards over the right field wall to make it a 5-2 game. Wofford left one runner on base in the top of the fourth after David Roney singled. The Spartans scored an unearned run in the bottom of the fourth on a ground out by T.J. Spina for a 5-3 score.

Matthew Pelt reached on a walk in the top of the fifth. A double by Konstantine Diamaduros scored Pelt, but Diamaduros was caught in a run-down between second and third. The Terriers left one runner on base and ended the inning with a 6-3 lead.

After UNCG was retired in order in the bottom of the fifth, Wofford led off the sixth with a single by David Roney and walk to Eric Brenk. The Terriers left both runners in scoring position. The Spartans went in order in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, Josh Hyman reached on a walk and James Plaisted singled. A double steal moved the runners into scoring position and Hyman scored on a wild pitch to go up 7-3.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans scored a run on a single through the left side by Kris Richards for a 7-4 score. UNCG left two runners on base at the end of the seventh inning. Wofford left one on base in the top of the eighth and the top of the ninth. The Spartans were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth with two strikeouts.

Wofford starter Brandon Yarusi (5-6) went seven innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. He had a career-high ten strikeouts in the game with only one walk. The ten strikeouts are tied for the fifth most in a single game in school history. Yarusi now has 97 strikeouts on the season, tied for third most in school history and the most for a player in the Division I era. Alex Wilson got his first save of the season by going two innings without allowing a hit and three strikeouts.

UNCG starter Max Povse (2-5) went 2.2 innings and gave up five runs on one hit with two strikeouts and four walks. Zach Furl worked a third of an inning without allowing a hit. Corey Taylor threw two innings and allowed one run on four hits. Brennen James went a third of an inning and gave up one hit. Jonathan Jones threw 1.2 innings and gave up one run on one hit with a strikeout. Wes McBride went the final two innings and gave up two hits with one strikeout.

The Terriers will continue the series at UNCG on Saturday and Sunday, with both games at 1:00 p.m.
