Baseball Falls 10-5 At UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wofford baseball team was defeated 10-5 on Saturday afternoon by UNC Greensboro at UNCG Stadium. Mac Doyle set the school record for career hits and total bases, but the Spartans took advantage of three errors to score a total of five unearned runs in the contest.

Wofford is 20-30 overall and 7-19 in the SoCon. UNCG is 23-24 overall and 8-18 in league play. The Terriers were led by Mac Doyle with two hits and two RBIs, while Matthew Pelt also had two hits. Five Spartans had two hits each, including Thomas Troelstrup who added three RBIs.

The Spartans had runners at second and third in the bottom of the first. A ground out by Thomas Troelstrup drove in the first run of the game for a 1-0 lead. In the top of the third, the Terriers had David Roney reach on an error and Matt Moore singled. Both runners were left on base.

In the bottom of the third, UNCG put runners at second and third when a ground out by Thomas Troelstrup scored a run to make it a 2-0 game. A single by Lloyd Enzor drove in another run for a 3-0 lead. The Spartans again had runners at second and third in the bottom of the fourth when a ground out by Cole Harrison drove in a run to make it 4-0.

The Terriers had David Roney reach second base on an error in the top of the fifth. Eric Brenk singled and a sacrifice fly by Matt Moore scored Roney to cut the lead to 4-1. James Foster added a single, but Eric Brenk was out at home on a questionable call. The Spartans left one on base in the bottom of the fifth.

Wofford had back-to-back singles from Matthew Pelt and Mac Doyle to open the sixth inning. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position and a sacrifice fly by Josh Hyman scored a run for a 4-2 game. The Spartans added a run on a two-out RBI triple by Cole Harrison. A single by Bobby Martin drove in Harrison to take a 6-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Wofford was retired in order. UNCG led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, but the runner was left on base. The Terriers had a single from Matthew Pelt in the top of the eighth. Mac Doyle then hit his twelfth home run of the season on a shot to left field to make it a 6-4 game.

The Spartans had two runners on base with two out when singles by Christian Wolfe and Thomas Troelstrup each drove in runs to take an 8-4 lead. A fielding error added a run and Tino Leite had a pinch hit single to push the lead to 10-4. In the top of the ninth, David Roney blasted a solo home run to right field for a 10-5 score. It was the third home run of the season for Roney. A double play ended the game for the Terriers.

Wofford starter Pete Noordsy (2-3) went 5.2 innings and allowed six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. J.D. Osborne threw the final 2.1 innings and gave up four hits and four unearned runs with two strikeouts.

UNCG starter Dylan Hathcock (4-4) threw six innings with five hits allowed and two runs scored without a strikeout. Zach Furl went two innings and allowed two runs on two hits with one strikeout. Tyler Hollstegge pitched the ninth and gave up a home run with one strikeout.

With his home run in the top of the eighth, Mac Doyle set the school record with 261 career hits, besting the 260 by Shane Kirkley (2005-08). The five bases on the day gave him a school record 482 total bases in his career, topping the 480 career bases by Shane Kirkley (2005-08). It was Doyle’s 46th career home run, which is third in school history.

The Terriers will complete the series at UNCG on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Wofford will take the week off for exams and return to the field on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. against Georgia Southern.
