Baseball Drops 8-7 Decision At UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – On a cloudy Sunday afternoon, the Wofford baseball team was defeated 8-7 by UNC Greensboro at UNCG Stadium. The Spartans scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the weekend series.

Wofford is 20-31 overall and 7-20 in the SoCon. UNCG is 24-24 overall and 9-18 in league play. The Terriers were led by David Roney with three hits and an RBI, while Mac Doyle had two hit. The Spartans were led by Kris Richards and T.J. Spina with three hits each and Lloyd Enzor with two RBIs.

The Terriers had two players reach on walks in the first inning, but both were left on base. UNCG led off with a single by Bobby Martin and with two outs a single by Lloyd Enzor scored the first run of the game. A second run scored on a failed pick off by the Terriers for a 2-0 score.

Wofford had runners at the corners after two singles in the top of the second inning. A bunt by Stephen Cantrell scored James Plaisted from third to make it a 2-1 game. The Spartans added a run on an RBI single from Bobby Martin in the bottom of the second for a 3-1 lead.

UNCG had two runners on base in the bottom of the third after a walk and a single, but both were left on base. In the top of the fourth, Josh Hyman had an infield single and then a triple to right center by David Roney drove in Hyman for a 3-2 score. A double by James Plaisted scored Roney to tie the game at 3. Eric Brenk walked and the runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt. A sacrifice fly by James Foster scored Plaisted to take a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Spartans had two runners on base when a single by Christian Wolfe drove in the tying run. A sacrifice fly by Thomas Troelstrup scored a run to regain the lead at 5-4. Mac Doyle opened the fifth inning with a double to right center and he moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. A wild pitch with Josh Hyman at the plate allowed Doyle to score and the game was tied at five.

The Spartans left two on base in the bottom of the fifth inning and Wofford was retired in order in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, UNCG had runners on base after an error and hit by pitch. A single by Lloyd Enzor drove in a run for a 6-5 lead. Another single loaded the bases with one out, but two strikeouts ended the scoring chance.

Wofford was retired in order in the top of the seventh. The Spartans loaded the bases on a fielder’s choice, single, and error, but all three runners were stranded to end the inning. In the top of the eighth, Josh Hyman was hit by a pitch and David Roney singled. Wofford loaded the bases on a fielder’s choice bunt by James Plaisted, as the throw to third was late. A passed ball allowed Hyman to score and tie the game at six. A two-out single by Luke Feisal drove in a run and the Terriers had a 7-6 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Kris Richards hit a double for the Spartans. A two-out double by T.J. Spina scored Richards and the game was tied at seven. A failed pick-off attempt allowed Spina to score and the Spartans led 8-7. In the top of the ninth, Mac Doyle singled but was left on base to end the game.

Wofford starter Cash Collins went four innings and gave up five runs on eight hits with one strikeout. Alex Wilson worked two innings and allowed one run on four hits with two strikeouts. Eric Eck (4-3) went the final two innings and gave up two runs on three hits with one strikeout.

UNCG starter Rob Gilliam worked three innings and gave up four runs on five hits with one strikeout. Jonathan Jones went an inning and had one strikeout. Corey Taylor was on the mound for two-thirds of an inning and gave up one hit and one run with a strikeout. Zach Furl picked up one out. Brennen James worked two innings and allowed one hit and two runs with two strikeouts. Tyler Hollstegge (5-6) went two innings and did not allow a run on two hits.

The Terriers are now 2-9 in SoCon games decided by one run. With the loss and a win by Furman over The Citadel on Sunday in twelve innings, Wofford will not qualify for the Southern Conference Tournament. The Terriers will take the week off for exams and return to the field on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. against Georgia Southern. The series against the Eagles will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m.
