Georgia Southern Tops Terriers 61-58 with a Buzzer Beater

STATESBORO, GA. -- Wofford's comeback with under two-minutes came up short as Georgia Southern's Anna Claire Knight knocked down a three at the buzzer to give the Eagles a 61-58 win over the Terriers Sunday afternoon in Hanner Fieldhouse in a Southern Conference game.

Wofford was down 58-52 heading into the final 1:42 of play, but threes from Frost, with 1:25 on the clock, and Frazier, with 32 seconds showing, tied the game at 58. On the Eagles' final possession, Alexis Sams missed a layup, but Georgia Southern was awarded the ball back following a jumpball on the rebound. On the ensuing inbounds with 2.4 seconds left, Knight drilled the game winner as the buzzer sounded to give the Eagles a 61-58 win.

Daniella Motley tied a career-high with 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to led the Terriers. She was 11-of-18 from the floor in the game and was the only Terrier in double-figures. It was her seventh double-double of the season and third in as many games.

Knight paced the Eagles with 16 points, 6-of-21 overall, while Mimi DuBose and Meredyth Frye followed with 12 and 11 points respectively.

Georgia Southern took an early 14-9 lead on a Knight jumper five and a five minutes into the game. The Eagles pushed the lead out to double-digits, 21-11, with a basket by Aishya Wofford 9:48 on the clock, but Wofford answered with a jumper from Khadijah Joyner lead to end a four-minute scoring drought for the Terriers on the next possession.

Wofford cut into the lead, 24-17, with back-to-back baskets by Motley with just over seven minutes to play, and the Terriers chipped the lead down to five points, 28-23, with two free throws from Rachel Brittenham with 3:32 on the clock.

Following an Eagle basket that ended a three minutes streak without a basket Brittenham pulled the Terriers to four points, 30-26, with a three from the top of the key at the two-minute mark. Aishya Wofford scored on post move for Georgia Southern to send the Eagles into the half with a 32-26 lead.

Wofford came out of the half with 6-0 run to tie the game at 32 on four points from Michelle Merritt two and a half minutes into play, but Georgia answered with 13-3 run to extend the lead back out 45-35 highlighted by threes from Knight and Jordi Cook with 13:04 on the clock. Motley ended the run with a basket and a three and a half minute stint without a Terrier point a minute later.

Motley's basket coupled with a three-point play by Jordan Frazier trimmed the lead down to five points, 45-40, with 11:47 on the clock. The Eagles extended the lead back to double-digits, 55-45, six minutes later on a drive and layup from DuBose. Georgia Southern was able to push the as they held Wofford for seven minutes without a basket from the floor. Wofford's only points came on free throws from Brittenham until Erin Frost made three from the wing to cut the lead back to five points, 55-50, with 3:37 on the clock.

A minute later, Wofford cut the gap to three points, 55-52, on a basket by Motley in the lane, but Georgia Southern responded with a free throw from Sierra Kirkland and a fast break layup by DuBose to make the score 58-52. with 1:42 left setting the game up for the thrilling finish.

After shooting at a 52 percent clip in the first half, the Eagles finished the game at 42 percent from the floor. Wofford ended the game at 36 percent overall. The Terriers committed 12 turnovers allowing the Eagles 17 points off turnovers.

Wofford falls to 5-10 overall and 0-7 in SoCon play, while Georgia Southern improves to 3-14 and 2-6 in the conference.

The Terriers return the Benjamin Johnson Arena against the College of Charleston on January 23 at noon as part of Education Day.
