Second Half Run Lifts Paladins Pass Terriers

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman used a 17-4 run in the second half en route a 70-61 win over Wofford Saturday afternoon in Timmons Arena.
 
Wofford falls to 6-11 overall and 1-8 in the Southern Conference, while Furman improves to 7-11 and 3-6 in conference play.
 
Wofford opened the first four minutes of play with a 14-4 run sparked by Jordan Frazier two steals and six points from Morgan Wrightson.  Furman answered with a 15-2 run highlighted by eight points from Kaitlin Murphy as the Paladins took a 19-16 lead with 10:36 on the clock in the half.
 
Logan Morris ended a four minute stretch for the Terriers without a basket as she knocked down a jumper from the win.  Following a Terrier steal Morris scored on a fast break layup on an assist from Brittenham as Wofford regained the lead, 20-19, a minute later.
 
Furman retook the lead 25-22 with a 6-2 run, but Mariah Masalin snapped an almost three-minute scoring drought for Wofford with an offensive rebound and a basket with 5:20 on the clock to trim the Paladin lead down to 25-24. Murphy responded for Furman with a three from the top of the key to take the lead back to four points, 28-24, on the next possession.
 
Furman extended the margin out to six points, 32-26, following free throws from Patrice Butler and Murphy with 3:16 left in the half, but Wofford was able to trim the lead down to five points, 34-29, heading into the half.
 
The Paladins went to the line 20 times in the first half converting on 15 shots, while Wofford attempted only five free throws making three.
 
Wofford came out of the half and tied the game at 40 on a free throw by Brittenham just less than five minutes into the half.  Frazier sparked the run again with her defensive pressure.
 
Furman responded with an 17-4 run as they pushed the lead out to 57-44 highlighted back-to-back baskets by Brittany Hodges with 6:24 remaining on the clock. Rachel Brittenham ended a three minute scoreless with streak with two free throws.  Following a technical foul against the Paladins and free throws by Wrightson and Frazier Wofford cut the lead down to 57-51 a minute later.
 
The Paladins took the lead out to ten points on a basket by Teshia Griswold with 3:28 on the clock and held on as Furman claimed the win 70-61.
 
Wofford outshot Furman from the floor, 44 percent compared to 43 percent.  The Paladins made three of its five threes for 60 percent, while the Terriers were held without a basket from three for the first time this season.  Furman also went 71 percent, 27-of-38 from the free throw line compared to 48 percent, 13-of-27, from the line.
 
The game featured 49 total turnovers, 23 for Wofford and 26 for Furman, and 59 personal fouls, 30 for Wofford and 29 for Furman.
 
The Paladin bench outscored the Terrier bench 36-18 in the game.
 
Wofford was led by Daniella Motley with 18 points, 14 of which came in the second half.  She finished the game 8-of-10 from the floor.  Wrightson followed with 14 points.  Rachel Brittenham finished the game with seven assists giving here 437 career assists, 12 away from the all-time Terrier record.
 
Murphy paced the Paladins with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor, 3-of-3 from three and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.  Hodges added 18 points for Furman.
 
Wofford returns to the Benjamin Johnson Arena for its next game against UNCG on Monday, January 28 at 6 p.m.
